Literacy and Languages

Literacy and Languages is the responsibility of all staff in Williamsburgh to contribute to the children’s learning and development in literacy, numeracy, and health and well-being. These subjects are often taught discretely and reinforced across all areas of children’s learning.

In Williamsburgh, we strive to develop our pupils’ English Language and Literacy skills. Literacy is fundamental to all areas of learning; the key to a wider curriculum. It increases opportunities, lays foundations for lifelong learning and contributes to the development of all four capacities of Curriculum for Excellence. The Literacy and English Language programme covers Reading, Writing, Talking and Listening,

Pupils develop their literacy skills through opportunities to communicate and collaborate, to reflect, to engage with and create a wide range of texts, to develop understanding of our own and others’ cultures and to explore the richness and diversity of language. They are encouraged to enrich their vocabulary through reading, writing, talking and listening.

In English Language, pupils engage with a wide range of texts to develop an appreciation of the richness and breadth of Scotland’s heritage and they explore and discuss word patterns and text structures.

Learning other languages enables children and young people to make connections with different people and their cultures and to play a fuller part as global citizens.

Pupils at all stages in Williamsburgh Primary School are given the opportunity to learn French. This is taught by trained primary teachers within the school. Close liaison with our associated secondary school and primary colleagues ensures progression and continuity in learning.

This session we are also beginning to teach Spanish to some stages. Many of our staff are being trained to deliver Spanish and this will be rolled out across other stages in future sessions.
