{"id":297,"date":"2015-05-26T08:26:36","date_gmt":"2015-05-26T08:26:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/re\/bridgeofweirprimary\/?page_id=297"},"modified":"2015-09-01T13:58:54","modified_gmt":"2015-09-01T13:58:54","slug":"numeracy-and-mathematics","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/re\/west\/curriculum\/numeracy-and-mathematics\/","title":{"rendered":"Numeracy and Mathematics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mathematics includes specific aspects of numeracy which will be developed both in mathematics and in other areas of the curriculum.<\/p>\n<p>Learning through mathematics enables children and young people to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Develop essential numeracy skills, including arithmetical skills, which allow them to participate fully in society<\/li>\n<li>Develop a secure understanding of the concepts, principles and processes of mathematics and apply them in different contexts<\/li>\n<li>Have an understanding of the application of mathematics, its impact on our society past and present, and its potential for the future<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In West Primary School we place importance on the value of active learning. In the early stages children have the opportunity to explore mathematics through purposeful play.<\/p>\n<p>As children progress through the school they will learn about the development of mathematics and its connections with other areas of learning in a relevant and active way. This cross-curricular approach helps to set contexts helping children find greater understanding.<\/p>\n<p>The main components in the development of mathematics are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Information handling<\/li>\n<li>Number, money and measure<\/li>\n<li>Shape, position and movement<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We are now introducing the Teejay Mathematics resources throughout the school.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mathematics includes specific aspects of numeracy which will be developed both in mathematics and in other areas of the curriculum.
