There is a progressive programme of phonics based on \u2018Jolly Phonics.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff\">In the middle and upper department, reading is supported through our <strong>Literacy World\/Big Cat and use of class novels <\/strong>for reading .<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff\">We encourage our children and young people to read at home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff\">Each class has access at the early stages to a variety of additional reading materials to suit all abilities and we actively try to encourage recreational reading.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong>Writing<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff\">Within Thorn, we use the Talk for Writing approach to teach and assess writing skills.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff\">All aspects of writing are developed throughout the school using a wide variety of opportunities and resources and are related to other areas of the curriculum.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff\">Teachers aim to provide opportunities for within real life contexts through topics and mini projects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong>Listening and Talking<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff\">Listening and talking skills are developed in many ways.
