Engaging In Home Learning Tasks.

Homework is a pivotal component of a child’s educational journey. At St. Fillan’s Primary School, our objective is to co-educate children to the highest possible standard in partnership with parents. This collaboration is essential to ensure that each child realises their potential and is prepared to embrace the complexities of today’s ever-evolving society.

Homework provides a valuable opportunity for children to consolidate their understanding and develop skills at their own pace, catering to their individual levels of attainment. Furthermore, it instils an ethos of study skills that will prove invaluable as children progress through life, encompassing critical thinking, planning, research, and the adept use of technology. We facilitate effective communication between school and home through the use of a homework diary and through our Online Digital Platform Seesaw, allowing parents to engage with their child’s learning journey. With the exception of Primary 1, homework is typically assigned on a Monday and expected to be returned later in the week, thereby cultivating time-planning skills while offering flexibility to accommodate extracurricular activities that equally benefit the pupils. Pupils in Primary 1 will receive a reduced amount of homework from Monday to Thursday, establishing a foundation for their educational experience.

The primary aims of homework are multifaceted. It serves to reinforce and consolidate the learning conducted in school, allowing pupils to practice the skills acquired in lessons. By doing so, we enable children to make significant progress in both academic and social development, while also aiding them in becoming independent and successful learners. Moreover, homework promotes a partnership between home and school, enhancing the support each child receives in their learning process.

During their time at St. Fillan’s Primary School, children will engage with a variety of homework tasks. Core assignments will primarily focus on Literacy and English, as well as Numeracy and Mathematics; however, tasks may also span other curricular areas. As children advance through their primary education, the complexity of tasks will increase, encouraging them to take greater responsibility for planning, completing, and reviewing their homework. Assignments may include written tasks, oral presentations, research activities, creative projects, or the incorporation of technology.

Each stage of primary education places specific emphasis on different aspects of learning. In Early Level, attention is paid to reading activities that engender a love for literature, while also reinforcing fundamental numeracy skills. Moving into First Level, pupils are encouraged to read aloud and enhance their comprehension skills. Furthermore, they will develop their ability to analyse texts and engage in discussions that foster language skills. In Second Level, the focus shifts towards more complex texts and deeper analysis, alongside expanding vocabulary and promoting research skills to support interdisciplinary learning.

Monitoring of homework completion is a responsibility shared between class teachers and the Senior Management Team, ensuring a comprehensive view of homework practises across the school. Parental support is crucial in fostering a positive homework environment. Parents are encouraged to create a distraction-free space for their children, assist in monitoring the completion of tasks, and actively engage in any assignments that require adult involvement.

By maintaining an open line of communication through the homework diary, parents can effectively support their child’s educational experience, reinforcing the partnership between home and school. We appreciate your ongoing support in enriching the learning journey of our pupils at St. Fillan’s Primary School.
