St. Fillan’s Primary School Hosts Successful Fairtrade Coffee Morning in Aid of Rainbow Valley
St. Fillan’s Primary School in Houston was buzzing with community spirit last weekend as the school welcomed over 100 parishioners to its annual Fairtrade Coffee Morning. The event brought together pupils, families, and friends in a celebration of Fairtrade values, music, and charitable giving.
The morning was made even more special by the uplifting performances of the St. Fillan’s Choir, who were joined by talented singers from St. Benedict’s High School S1 and S4 classes. Their combined voices filled the hall with harmony, creating a joyful atmosphere that perfectly matched the occasion.
A heartfelt thank you was extended to the S6 Caritas boys from St. Benedict’s, whose dedication and support helped ensure the smooth running of the event. From serving coffee to welcoming guests, their contribution embodied the spirit of service and community.
Supporting Rainbow Valley 🌈
All proceeds from the coffee morning were donated to Rainbow Valley, a Scottish charity that empowers and educates people affected by cancer. Founded in memory of Johanna, who passed away from leukaemia at the age of 27, Rainbow Valley was created to provide holistic support that goes beyond medical treatment.
The charity offers unique residential courses such as the “7 Steps to Health” programme, which address the psychological, spiritual, emotional, and physical needs of individuals and their families. By incorporating nutrition, exercise, relaxation, and complementary therapies, Rainbow Valley helps participants regain a sense of control and resilience while living with or overcoming cancer.
Rainbow Valley relies heavily on fundraising events like the St. Fillan’s Coffee Morning to continue its vital work. Every donation contributes to creating safe spaces where people can learn, heal, and thrive together.
A Community Effort
The Fairtrade Coffee Morning was not only a fundraiser but also a celebration of community values. Parishioners enjoyed Fairtrade tea, coffee, and home baking, reinforcing the importance of ethical choices in everyday life.
Mrs McPherson along with Father Andrew praised the event as a shining example of how schools and local communities can work hand in hand to make a difference. The turnout of more than 100 guests highlighted the strong bonds within Houston and the surrounding area.
Looking Ahead
With the success of this year’s coffee morning, St. Fillan’s Primary School hopes to continue building on its tradition of charity, music, and Fairtrade awareness. The funds raised will go a long way in supporting Rainbow Valley’s mission, ensuring that those affected by cancer receive the holistic care and empowerment they deserve.
In the words of one parishioner: “It was more than just coffee and cake – it was a morning filled with hope, song, and community”
