What will I be learning in P3<\/p>\n

Literacy
\nIn primary 3 we will use our increasing knowledge of vocabulary, phonics, punctuation and grammar to read a wider variety of texts with understanding and to improve fluency and expression in our oral reading. In reading lessons we will be increasingly able to identify the characters, setting and plot in fiction and the main ideas and purpose of a non-fiction text. We will become more skilled at asking and answering relevant questions and discussing and assessing ideas in greater detail with the teacher, a partner (for example, in \u2018Buddy Reading\u2019) or in a large group.
\nUsing the class library we will independently select different types of material to read, illustrate and share in weekly book reviews and presentations.
\nIn writing we will use a variety of stimulating contexts to write extended personal and imaginative stories and have wider experience of writing a purpose in reports, letters, notes, fact files, diagrams and posters.<\/p>\n

Mathematics
\nIn maths we will begin to investigate how whole numbers are consructed to 1000. We will learn the link between a digit, its place and its value.
\nWe will use addition and subtraction (adding and subtracting mentally to 20 and above), multiplication and division when solving problems and we will know how to use the 2, 3, 5 and 10 times tables.
\nWe will develop our knowledge of measurement of time: hour, quarter to, quarter past; of fractions: half, quarter, third, sixth; of length: metre and half metre; and of weight and capacity: kilogram, half kilogram, litre and half litre.
\nWe will also learn to read and create simple tables, charts and diagrams.
\nIn all our lessons we will keep as a focus the practical application of knowledge and skills. For example, in using the class shop: tally marking daily lunch orders, adding money collections, measuring areas for games, collecting and using questionaire data from other classes.<\/p>\n

Science
\nThis year we will be observing marterials and how they can be changed. We will investigate what happens when things are heated and melted. Carrying out experiments on the world around us will enable us to learn more about forces and magnetism. We will use our skills of observation to examine the world around us and learn about how our senses help us to understand our world.<\/p>\n

P.E
\nThis year we will be developing our skills in games, dance, ball skills and gymnastics.<\/p>\n

Ethos and Wider Life of the School
\nIn Primary 3, we will:
\nGive whole school presentations at Assembly time using costumes, role-play, songs and poems to illustrate learning after our topics.
\nContribute to fund-raising for the MISSIO, UNICEF\u00a0and Mary\u2019s Meals<\/p>\n

What will I be learning in P4<\/p>\n

Literacy
\nLanguage is about communicating.\u00a0 We will enjoy reading novels, information texts and poetry and use these as a basis for discussion and prediction, considering intentions and feelings.\u00a0 In primary 4 we are encouraged to read texts that we find interesting and enjoy.\u00a0 We are learning that to read with fluency and expression understanding that it makes our reading more interesting for the listener.
\nWe will be provided with a variety of different resources to deepen our understanding of how different texts are presented.\u00a0 We are also learning about the importance of note taking and selecting relevant information from the text that we read.\u00a0 We will write in a variety of genres producing leaflets, posters, fact files and personal projects.\u00a0 Throughout Primary 4 we use a variety of methods to help plan our writing including mind mapping and we will use VCOP to improve and develop our wtiting skills.\u00a0 We will also use writing checklists to assess our own and each others work.\u00a0 We will learn to speak with confidence in a variety of situations from presentations to reading Scottish poetry at our St. Andrew\u2019s Day concert, taking time to consider our audience, the purpose, pace and tone.\u00a0 We will develop our listening skills in a variety of ways such as, listening to visiting speakers and through the use of video clips.<\/p>\n

Mathematics
\nThere\u2019s a lot to maths, shape, position & movement, number, money & measurement and information handling.\u00a0 In primary 4 we will cover, Place Value, Fractions, Time, Money and Shape, we will also ensure that we are confident with the process of adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing.\u00a0 We will be looking at the different strategies that help us in our mental calculations and we will be encouraged to find ways of solving problems in our heads, including the learning of our multiplication tables.\u00a0 We will undertake active maths activities which help us build on our existing knowledge and give us an understanding of the role that maths has in our everyday lives.<\/p>\n

P.E
\nThis year we will develop skills in games, creative and Scottish dance, gymnastics and athletics.<\/p>\n

Ethos and Wider Life of the School
\nAt St. Catherine\u2019s we are very proud of the many ways that we help other people, develop awareness of our world and learn to be responsible citizens.
\nIn P4 we will:
\nsupport UNICEF and take part in Day for Change
\ndevelop knowledge about our rights and responsibilities by contributing to the school, maintaining its Rights Respecting School status
\nsupport MISSIO during the season of Lent
\ncelebrate our Confession and First Holy Communion
