Fèis Phàislig is an arts organisation that provides opportunities in traditional music and Gaelic culture for young people across Renfrewshire. Gaelic for Paisley Festival, Fèis Phàislig was established in 2015 and delivered our first ever ‘Fèis Week’, an intensive course of come-and-try workshops, that saw over 60 children take part in instrumental tuition, singing and drama with some of Scotland’s leading traditional musicians. We now provide a year-round programme of events that delivered to over 4500 in 2019.
As part of Renfrewshire Council’s Youth Music Initiative programme, our Introduction to Traditional Music project aims to give pupils a fun and engaging experience of their culture and heritage. Through music, song, dance and more, our tutors provide a broad introduction to Scottish music and Gaelic culture and give pupils the opportunity to hear, experience and enjoy the traditional arts.
We work with Renfrewshire Council to identify schools that would benefit from the project and those schools are offered tuition in tin whistle or Gaelic song. Pupils require no previous experience of music or Gaelic to participate. You can watch a short introductory video to the project on YouTube.
Classes receive up to 8 consecutive sessions working with one of our team of professional musicians. Pupils will learn about different Scottish instruments, song traditions and dance while reinforcing the four capacities of Curriculum for Excellence. A teachers’ resource is available allowing classroom teachers extra support in the absence of the tutor to go over what was learned in sessions.
One of our aims through the YMI sessions is to provide long-term learning pathways for pupils, allowing them to develop their skills continually over time. Pupils are encouraged to continue learning with us through our year-round programme of events including our Gaelic Choir and Weekly Lessons programmes.
