Numeracy

Rationale

Improving attitudes towards numeracy and mathematics remains a key national priority and reducing maths anxiety will help improve enjoyment, engagement and attainment in the subject.  We know from our attainment data that we must continue to focus on closing the poverty-related attainment gap whilst raising attainment for all in numeracy and mathematics.  We will invest in high-quality CLPL that deepens practitioners’ knowledge and understanding of effective pedagogy in numeracy and mathematics.  Taking cognisance of the findings of the national thematic inspection in numeracy and mathematics, our professional learning will be underpinned by collaborative enquiry to ensure sustained positive impact on our children and young people.

Intended outcomes

  • MCOs will work directly with schools to deepen staff’s knowledge and understanding of effective pedagogy in numeracy and mathematics with a view to raising attainment.
  • Schools engaging with numeracy CLPL will see an increase in learner engagement.
  • Teachers engaging in numeracy CLPL will be more confident in embedding effective pedagogy, assessing pupil progress and planning next steps in learning.
  • Children and young people will feel less anxious about learning mathematics.
