A recent survey found that\u00a0<strong>one in seven<\/strong>\u00a0primary school pupils learns English as an additional language.<\/p>\n<p>There is lots of evidence that bilingual children can do well at school. However, they \u2013 and you as parents \u2013 will need extra help, especially in the early days.<\/p>\n<h3>How can I help my child?<\/h3>\n<p>Your\u00a0<strong>interest<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>involvement<\/strong>\u00a0in your child\u2019s learning are the best ways you can help.<\/p>\n<p>Tell your child\u2019s teacher about their\u00a0<strong>previous education<\/strong>. What kind of school did they go to? Which subjects does your child find easy or difficult? What did they like\/dislike about their last school?<\/p>\n<p>At home,\u00a0<strong>talk<\/strong>\u00a0to your child about what happens at school in your first language. Encourage them to teach you their new English skills \u2013 you could keep a notebook together with words in your first language, the English translation and how to say the words.<\/p>\n<p>Your child is likely to pick up English very quickly \u2013 especially if they\u2019re primary school age.
