This week we have been presenting our Titanic Personal Projects. You have been sharing lots of information in a variety of ways. The sinking of the Titanic has definitely been a favourite with lots of you basing your project around this part of the topic.

This will be your final presentation of Primary 5 and I am delighted at just how much so many of you have grown in confidence since your River Clyde projects way back in term 1. Well done everyone!

Over the next few weeks you should prepare a personal project presentation on the Titanic. You will then present your project to the class the week beginning Monday 17th June.  The criteria and task sheet can be found below. Remember to try and present your information in a different format from what you have done before. Be creative!

Titanic Personal Project Presentation

Learning Outcome:  I can research a  given topic and create a detailed presentation.

I can use primary and secondary sources selectively to research events in the past.  SOC 2-01a

I can discuss why people and events from a particular time in the past were important, placing them within a historical sequence. SOC 2-06a

Skill for Learning

Application & Knowledge: I can apply my knowledge of a given topic to plan and produce an interesting presentation.

 Skill for Work

I can organise my time and resources independently to ensure my presentation is completed in the allocated time.

Background

To build further on your presentation skills you have to prepare a personal project to present to your peers. Presentations play a huge part in our learning and being able to present to your peers, with confidence, is a great skill to learn.

Task

What you need to know: Your personal project should be about the Titanic. You may choose any aspect you wish.

What you need to do: You can present your project in any way you choose. This might be in written form, a PowerPoint presentation, a booklet, a video or even a model. In other words, you have the choice to choose the way you feel will best help you to demonstrate your knowledge of your chosen topic. This project is all homework based therefore you need to think about the resources you will have access to: books, library, internet, personal accounts etc.

What you need to think about: You can use whatever you need to describe your personal project: photographs, videos, props etc. Try to think about why you picked this area for your project. What was it that interested you about it? Remember some people in class may know nothing about the area you have chosen to discuss, so you must explain it in detail.

How to get started: Get all of your ideas down on paper and then decide which ones are the most relevant and will best engage your audience.

Product Criteria

·         You have 4 weeks to pull your presentation together so use your time wisely. You will be presenting your information to the class the week beginning Monday 17th June 2018. Remember to try and present your information in a different format from what you have done before. Be creative!

·         This is an independent research project. It is your responsibility to organise your time effectively and ensure you are putting in enough effort.

·         Everyone will approach this task in different ways so don’t worry if your friends are doing something different from you. Have faith in what you have to say and it will all work out.

·         This is your chance to show just how well you can take responsibility for your own learning.

Happy researching!

Today’s task will involve you finding the journey taken by the Titanic on its maiden voyage.

Part 1For this task you should access the links below. You may also use the class atlases.

Each group member should use the links to find the information required to complete their blank map of the Titanic’s journey. You should identify the main locations linked to the following:

  • her construction
  • maiden voyage
  • sinking
  • rescue of the survivors.

This information should then be transferred to your larger group map.

Southern Ireland

New York

Northern Ireland

England

France

P5S – The Titanic’s Maiden Journey – Advertising Poster

Today we created posters to advertise the maiden voyage of the Titanic. In pairs, or as individuals, we had to decide which aspects of our research was relevant and should be displayed in our poster. Can you remember what information was most important? We also looked at examples to help us make them as authentic as possible.

Once again, I was delighted at just how well everyone worked – keep up the great work! Here is everyone hard at work and a few of the completed posters.

P5S – Titanic Timelines

I can use primary and secondary sources selectively to research events in the past. SOC 2-01a.

I can interpret historical evidence from a range of periods to help to build my sense of chronology. SOC 2-02a

What a great afternoon’s work was completed today! I am delighted with the effort and attitude shown on this task. Well done everyone!

Today we researched the Titanic: from its construction, to the first few days of it’s maiden voyage  and how and when it sank. Can you remember how quick the timescale was from the ship hitting the iceberg to it sinking? Please tell someone at home something learned from our task.

Using your research, each group had to create a timeline showing important and relevant information. Here are your completed timelines.

P5S – Meet our Titanic Families

This week we started our Titanic topic with our Home Team Challenge. With your new group you had to create a banner and poster which included information you researched relating to family life during the early 20th century. You were given a list of names of families who were on board the Titanic during it’s maiden voyage, and had to choose one for your group name. We had some very interesting choices made.

Meet our Titanic families.

The Appleton Family

The Evans Family

The Newell Family

The Goodman Family

The Silven Family

The Carter Family
