Times Tables Tricks

Useful Strategies for X Tables at Home

Dear Parents/Carers,

Welcome to a new school year! P4 have an exciting time ahead of them. Throughout the year, as well as the children gaining knowledge and understanding through their learning, a large emphasis will be placed on developing their skills of collaboration, problem solving, communication and decision making. We will be going outside for P.E. and other outdoor learning activities everyday so please make sure your child is dressed appropriately. Mrs Simpson and Mrs MacFarlane will be the teachers on Wednesdays.

Please visit the class blogs at:

P4H – https://blogs.glowscotland.org.uk/re/primary4bps/category/primary-4h/

P4M – https://blogs.glowscotland.org.uk/re/primary4bps/category/primary-4m/

The homework will be posted on the blog every week so you can check what is expected of your child. We are not using Homework Diary this year but on a Monday the tasks are introduced and explained. As much as possible we would like the spelling homework to be uploaded to Teams or emailed to the class teacher. Please do not allow your child to become upset/distressed about homework. If we can provide you with any advice or help to support your child with their work, please do not hesitate to get in touch. All homework will be issued on a Monday and is due on a Friday, unless otherwise stated.

Reading – Each week your child will be given a reading book to read at home which has been prepared in class. They should be able to read this book and should try to read most nights. When reading with your child please use the 3 P’s – Pause, Prompt and Praise if they are unable to read a word. Another strategy you could use is the Three Sharings: 1. What are your likes/dislikes about the book? 2. What are your puzzles/questions about the book? 3. Can you find any connections in the book? Does it remind you of anything in your life or a book or film/TV you have seen?

Spelling – All pupils will have a weekly spelling rule to focus on.  Each child will be given 4 or 6 words which follow the spelling rule and 4 commons words each week.  You will find these in a list in the front of their Spelling Homework jotter.  Your child should rewrite these words twice at home using the Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check method. They should write four sentences using common word and spelling rule word. To help them focus on the spelling, they should underline the spelling and common words they have used. Finally, to encourage self-assessment they should check their work for any quick fixes .e.g. missing capital letters or punctuation. We are continuing using the Wraparound Spelling method where your child should record any shoot words they can think of.

The spelling words can also be found at https://www.spellingcity.com/users/MissMcDowall where the pupils can play a variety of the free games to practise their words. They do not need a username or password for this website.

Maths – Throughout the year written, active and online Maths tasks will be issued as appropriate. The written maths homework will either consolidate learning of their current maths topic or will cover various topics to allow the pupils to continually revise maths and number concepts.

Other curricular areas – As the topics develop, homework may be issued to accompany learning from class.

As many of the homework activities will require access to the internet, we would be grateful if you could let us know if there will be any problems with your child using a computer. It will be possible for paper-based exercises to be given. However, to reduce items being brought back and forwards from school, we will try to use Teams. For extra practise of specific aspects of learning (eg. spelling, times tables) you can find useful websites on our blog:

https://blogs.glowscotland.org.uk/re/primary4bps/literacy-links/ https://blogs.glowscotland.org.uk/re/primary4bps/maths-links/

A note of your child’s important usernames and passwords has been sent home today. Please keep this in a safe place. If you would like to speak to us regarding any issues or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Kind regards,

Miss McDowall and Miss Boyle

P4 Homework Information

Dear Parents/carers,

We will be starting homework on Monday 31st August. We will post a Homework letter on the blog to explain the P4 routines but we will not send a paper copy home. Your child will be given a sheet of paper with their usernames and passwords for certain websites they will be using this year. Please keep this in a safe place. They have chosen their glow password themselves and we will not have a record of this in class. However, if they get locked out we can help them out.

As we are trying to minimise paper and resources travelling between school and home, all spelling and maths homework should be completed at home and uploaded on Teams. Every spelling task and maths task will show as an assignment and this is where photos of your child’s work should be attached. We will go over this with your child in school but it is the same procedure as they did during lock down. If you have no access to the internet or a device to use, please let us know so we can work around this. Reading books should usually be given out on a Monday and returned on a Friday. Depending on the length of the book it could be 4 nights (Mon-Thurs) or more.

Please get in touch if you have any questions.

Kind regards,

P4 Class Teachers
