Good morning,

We hope you are having a lovely weekend.

Reminders & Homework:

SOUNDS          The 10 Best Ways to Help Kids Learn Phonics (Activities to Help Your Child Learn to Read!) | How to Learn

We learned new sounds – ‘l’ and ‘f’ this week. The links for the Jolly Phonics songs and actions relating to all the sounds can be found in the PowerPoint in Teams, under files. Please continue to practice all sounds at home as much as possible. We have added flash cards for the new sounds to files, for those who wish to print these out.

SIGHT WORDS

We learned two new sight words – ‘are’ and ‘as’.  These have been added to our flashcards folder on Teams. If you would like some extra practice, please choose a sight word activity from the grid on Teams. We check sight word progress regularly in class and are delighted with the progress the children are making – thank you for your support with this.

A new wordless book will be issued on MondayPlease encourage your child to use the picture clues to tell the story. It is important that children can explain and describe what is happening in pictures to help them develop their reading comprehension skills.  Please return wordless books to school this Friday 30th Oct. We are outstanding a few books from last week – please return these to school as soon as possible.

Reading for enjoyment picture books will only be issued every 2 weeks from now on, therefore no new books will be taken home this week. Please return existing books to school this Friday 30th Oct. Don’t forget to use the 3 sharings when discussing the story at home:

REMINDERS

  • Details of our lunch menu can be found here.
  • Our outdoor sessions will be on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday – please ensure your child has warm and waterproof clothing on these days.
  • Read & Munch will be on Thursday. Your child may bring in a favourite book from home to read in class and a healthy snack.
  • Reminder – we are a nut free school therefore no food containing nuts should be brought in for lunch or snacks.
  • During our infant assembly on a Wednesday morning, one of the things we celebrate is any wider achievements, for example, swimming badges, taking part in tournaments, charity events, etc. We would love to hear about any wider achievements so that your child can be recognised for this. A Certificate of Wider achievement is saved in the files tab within Teams – you can either print this & complete it at home or let us know if you would like one issued from school.
  • All children are invited to wear a Hallowe’en costume on Friday, or wear orange and black. We ask that no masks, wigs or props are brought into school and no face paint is applied.

A new wordless book will be issued on Wednesday. One of the first reading strategies that we teach children is using picture clues to tell the story. It is important that children can explain and describe what is happening in pictures to help them develop their reading comprehension skills. Due to the requirement for quarantining books after each use, there is a tight turnaround time on this first book – please return wordless books to school this Friday.

Reading for enjoyment picture books will be chosen by your child and issued on Wednesday. From now on, these will only be issued every 2 weeks, therefore please return this book to school on Friday 30th October. Don’t forget to use the 3 sharings when discussing the story at home:

P1M & P1W Week Beginning 5/10

Good afternoon,

We hope you are having a lovely weekend.

Reminders & Homework

Sounds             The 10 Best Ways to Help Kids Learn Phonics (Activities to Help Your Child Learn to Read!) | How to Learn

Last week, we learned the sound ‘d’. The links for the Jolly Phonics songs and actions relating to all the sounds can be found on the class Teams page, in files. Please continue to practice all of the sounds at home as much as possible, as this will be highly beneficial to your child. We have added a template of sound cards to Teams – you may wish to print these out to use at home or alternatively make your own sound cards.

Sight Words          Sight Words – Mrs. Sheila Hacker – Butterfield Elementary

We have learned the sight words ‘the’, ‘and’, ‘of’,  ‘a’, ‘to’, ‘in’, ‘is’ and ‘you’, ‘he’ and ‘was’ to date. The aim is for your child to be able to learn these words by sight, so that they are instantly recognisable, and to be able use them appropriately in an oral sentence. For homework, we would like you to practice these words with your child. This can be done by making individual flashcards for each of the words or trying to recognise them in books. We have provided a little more information on learning sight words on teams. Practicing little and often is the best method for helping your child to learn and retain their sight words. We check sight words regularly in class and can see the fantastic progress that the children are making – thank you for your help with this.

Reading        Two children reading books in school - Download Free Vectors, Clipart Graphics & Vector Art

Your child will take their chosen picture book home tomorrow, to enjoy reading with you. Please return this book to school on Friday of this week. Please remember to use the three sharings when discussing the book: –

  1. Likes & dislikes (What was your favourite part of the story? Is there anything you didn’t like about the story?).
  2. Puzzles (Was there anything that puzzled you or you thought strange? / Were there any parts that you didn’t understand?).
  3. Patterns / Connections (Does this book remind you of any other stories? Can you make any connections between parts of the story and your own life?).

Number

We have attached a SEAL homework learning wall to files on teams. Please choose one activity to complete with your child.

Maths

We are focusing on 2d shapes – square, triangle, circle and rectangle – in maths. Can you have a shape hunt around your house to see if you can find any objects with these shapes. We would love to hear about these in class during the week.

Reminders

  1. Our outdoor learning sessions will be on Mon, Wed, Thu and Fri of this week. Please ensure your child has suitable warm and waterproof clothing and footwear for these days.
  2. Read & Munch is on Thursday. Your child can bring in a favourite book from home and a healthy snack to enjoy at this time.
  3. Here is the link to our school lunch options. If your child is having a school lunch, we ask that you discuss the options with them each day, so they are aware of what they are having before coming to school. We will then order their choice for them.
  4. If you have yet to do so, please return the parents evening forms to school on Monday. Parent telephone appointments will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week.
  5. A reminder to please label all items of clothing & any items brought into class – water bottles, lunchboxes, etc.
  6. If you have yet to do so, please return the data forms to school as soon as possible. This will allow the office staff to ensure we have the most up-to-date information on file.

P1M/P1W: Maths Week Scotland

This week we have been celebrating Maths Week Scotland 2020. We have been so busy both in class and outdoors learning all about different areas of maths.

On Tuesday we learned about 2D shape with Mrs Hughes and Mrs Kane. We enjoyed exploring different shape games and using shapes to make ‘shape pictures’. On Wednesday we learned a new number. This weeks number was ‘Frisky Five’ the Kangaroo. We enjoyed hopping around the class like a kangaroo and making our very own Kangaroo 5. On Thursday, our class went out to pick litter in the playground. We shared out the litter pickers and worked in pairs to count the litter as we collected it. We managed to count lots of pieces of litter. Today, on our Fun Friday, we practised our subitising skills. We loved listening to the Jack Hartman subitising song – attached below. During our Golden Time, we made marble runs using our STEM skills. We worked together to come up with the best plan. We have also spent lots of time throughout the week playing maths games with our friends and developing maths and number skills through play.

What a busy week! We hope you enjoy reading about what we have been up to during Maths Week.

** Pictures are a little limited as we are still looking for many of the data and photo consent forms to be returned. We need these to be returned as soon as possible so we can share our learning with you on our class blog. Thanks**
