Good afternoon! I hope you are all having a lovely weekend. Homework and reminders for the coming week can be found below.

Sounds: Sound cards for “er” and “ar” have been added to the book bags.. Please continue to practice all of the sounds learned to date. These should be looked over as often as possible at home. To challenge your child, please ask them to think of/find something that begins with or contains that specific sound.

Word Walls: It is very important that the children are practicing their sight words as much as possible as this will build their confidence in reading them independently. Please continue to check over these with your child as often as possible. Only the words highlighted in yellow should be practiced. Your child should also be able to use these words correctly in a sentence. Once we are seeing your child do so, with confidence, we will highlight the box green.

Reading: New reading books will be sent home by Tuesday. Please read them with your child, discussing the story/words. The children should sound out the words and, where necessary, use the picture cues to help them “read” the words.

Book Hunt: On Friday we headed out to hide the first of our books for our Book Hunt. A huge thank you to the parents who came with us to help. Folders with books and covering letters were sent home for hiding with the children. Thank you if you have already hidden your book. Please remember photos can be emailed to us (we have already had one set of photos sent) which we will post on the blog to send out clues as to where the books are hidden. The children can also go book hunting themselves for any that their classmates have already hidden. You can also send photos if the children are lucky enough to find any. Happy hiding ….. and finding …….. and reading!

Maths: Please choose one of the dotted activities on the maths sheet. Once completed, please sign and date the sheet beside the chosen task.

H&WB: March school targets are being set with the children. If your child’s February target has been achieved, please set a new one for March with them.

  1. P.E. will be on Monday and Friday. Please remember long hair should be tied back and earrings removed or covered.
  2. Please remember to add any books your child has read to their Reading Challenge Passport.
  3. Book bags should be checked each evening for homework and any letters which may have been issued. These letters should be removed from the book bag.
  4. Read & Munch will be on Friday.

As always, if you have any questions regarding homework, please do not hesitate to contact us. This can be done via the blog or your child’s book bag.

First Minister’s Reading Challenge

Good afternoon,

Today all children were issued with a Reading Passport to allow them to take part in the First Minister’s Reading Challenge.  Children are being encouraged to read as many books as possible throughout the term and record this in their passport. This is a national initiative – more information can be found at www.readingchallenge.scot

We appreciate your support and encouragement in this.

Many thanks,

Miss Cuthill

P1P and P1S STEM DAY 2020

We had a fantastic day on Friday,  taking part in STEM day, organised by Bishopton Primary’s wonderful STEM ambassadors and their supporting teachers.

The STEM ambassador’s designed this day around the Sustainable Development Goal of Zero Hunger – one of many goals that all United Nations Member States seek to achieve by 2030.

We began our day by meeting our STEM ambassador representatives for the day, and the girls did a fantastic job delivering their presentation. With knowledge of our morning task to design a biodegradable plant pot, we set off on a nature hunt outside to see what we could find to use on our pots. LOTS of fun was had doing this despite the weather!

When we returned to the classroom, the children worked together to design their biodegradable plant pots before planting some herbs in them. We are very excited to watch them grow in class!

After lunch we read a book called ‘The World Came To My Place Today’ about a boy called George who was fascinated to learn that everything he eats or touches comes from different places around the world. We were amazed by this as well – it certainly prompted a lot of questions! After discussing the story, P1 worked in small groups to recreate their favourite part of the book. Considering this was only the second time that we had formally asked the children to do this, Mrs O’Neill and I were impressed with their effort!

We learned about the different parts of a plant and what they need to grow and stay healthy. Following this, we planted some strawberry seeds to see if they will grow in our classroom enviroment. We hope so!

Finally, P1 were challenged to use their creative problem solving skills to create something that they use in their house using a variety of resources including Big Blocks, Lego and Kid K’Nex. We had lots of fantastic ideas and models including stairs, chairs, tables and even a bed!

Thanks again to our two lovely STEM ambassadors for all of their help throughout the day.

Here are some photos of our biodegradable plant pots.

Open Afternoon

On Friday 28th February we will be having our Open Afternoon. This will be taking place between 2.00pm-3.00pm.  We would like to invite one guest per child to join us. During this time you will have the opportunity to play some of the activities the children enjoy using in our Free Flow sessions.

Our afternoon will begin in the gym hall where the children will perform a few songs, therefore you should enter the school via the school office. After this we will return to the classrooms and open area to participate in a few of the children’s chosen activities.

We look forward to seeing you there.
