P1M/W: Christmas Art Day

Good afternoon,

What a busy day we have had in P1M/W. We started the morning by putting up our class Christmas tree and decorating it. We enjoyed exploring some Christmas activities and playing with our new artic snow tuff tray and the Christmas Cafe role play area.

As part of our Art Day fun we created a display to say thank you to some of the Key workers. We focussed on the Emergency Services in Primary 1. P1M/W made a life sized police man by drawing round a child and we used paint to decorate a police car. Individually we created Christmas cards, decorations and mini police cars to go on our display. We made a big mess but we had lots of fun.

Here are some pictures for you to enjoy.

Have a lovely weekend,

Miss Wilson & Miss Murray

Here is a picture of our fantastic display – Thank you to all keyworkers.

We learned two new sight words – ‘this’ and ‘have’. These have been added to our flashcards folder on Teams. If you would like some extra practice, please choose a sight word activity from the grid on Teams.

READING    Two children reading books in school - Download Free Vectors, Clipart Graphics & Vector Art

A new reading book will be issued. Please note that there may be a delay with books this week as we have lots of books that have not been returned. These books need to be quarantined. Please encourage your child to use the picture clues to help tell the story. It is important that children can explain and describe what is happening in pictures to help them develop their reading comprehension skills.  Please return reading books to school on Friday 27th November

As reading for enjoyment picture books are being issued every 2 weeks, no new books will be issued this week. Existing books are due for return this Friday 27th November. Don’t forget to use the 3 sharings when discussing the story at home:

  • Details of our lunch menu can be found here.
  • Our outdoor sessions will be on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday – please ensure your child has warm and waterproof clothing on these days. It might be helpful to keep a spare pair of socks in school bags, to help with wet feet on rainy days.

P1M/W – Nativity

Good afternoon,

Please look out for a letter in your child’s bag today detailing your child’s nativity part. The letter details their lines for the play. If possible could you help your child to practise their line. We will be practising lots over the next few weeks in class but it is helpful if they can commit their line to memory. Little and often works best for this.

We have also listed items that would be useful for your child’s costume. We are in the process of allocating costumes, however it is useful to have the basic’s listed for them to wear underneath. Please do not buy anything new, if there is anything you do not have at home please let us know. We would ask that these are please sent in no later than Friday 4th of December to allow us to quarantine items as necessary. Please ensure that anything sent in is in a plastic bag clearly labelled with your child’s name. We are also looking for a baby doll (to be used as Jesus) – if you have something suitable and would be willing to lend it to us we would be most grateful.

All nativity related activities will be modified to follow current COVID-19 guidelines. Nonetheless, we can’t wait for the festivities begin. It’s such a lovely time of year for the children. If you have any questions at all, please do get in touch.

Many Thanks,

Miss Wilson & Miss Murray

  • Finally, please do not allow your child to bring any toys to school. With COVID-19 risk assessment in place we are trying to reduce the number of items coming to and from school. Additionally, often these items can cause upset if they are lost or broken.

P1M & P1W – Children in Need 2020

Good evening,

We have had a wonderful day celebrating Children in Need 2020. We enjoyed lots of ‘Pudsey’ themed activities. We learned about what Children in Need charities do and thought a little about how we can help others who may be less fortunate than ourselves.

This morning we enjoyed Pudsey themed activities in our play. Some of us chose to make masks or to decorate Pudsey bandanas using paint. Miss Murray and Miss Wilson made a big Pudsey face on our tuff tray for us to enjoy.

This afternoon, we learned about money and counted some pennies. We listened to a story about Pudsey’s Bake Sale and counted how much each cake costed. We also completed a Bake Sale themed cut and stick. For gym today, we did a CIN themed workout. It was really tiring.

At the end of the day, we read a Children in Need story and listened to the CIN choir singing a lovely song.

We have had a super busy day. Thank you to everyone who dressed up and donated some money to Children in Need. Have a lovely weekend.

P1M & P1W – Wet Weather Clothing

Good evening,

The weather this week is forecast to be particularly wet. If possible, could parents ensure that pupils have their full waterproofs in their school bag. Wellies should be kept at school. It would be helpful if you could practise putting the waterproofs on and off at home with your child and reiterate that waterproofs must be worn outside during wet weather.

Thanks for your help with this.

Miss Wilson and Miss Murray.

P1M/P1W: Maths Week Scotland

This week we have been celebrating Maths Week Scotland 2020. We have been so busy both in class and outdoors learning all about different areas of maths.

On Tuesday we learned about 2D shape with Mrs Hughes and Mrs Kane. We enjoyed exploring different shape games and using shapes to make ‘shape pictures’. On Wednesday we learned a new number. This weeks number was ‘Frisky Five’ the Kangaroo. We enjoyed hopping around the class like a kangaroo and making our very own Kangaroo 5. On Thursday, our class went out to pick litter in the playground. We shared out the litter pickers and worked in pairs to count the litter as we collected it. We managed to count lots of pieces of litter. Today, on our Fun Friday, we practised our subitising skills. We loved listening to the Jack Hartman subitising song – attached below. During our Golden Time, we made marble runs using our STEM skills. We worked together to come up with the best plan. We have also spent lots of time throughout the week playing maths games with our friends and developing maths and number skills through play.

What a busy week! We hope you enjoy reading about what we have been up to during Maths Week.

** Pictures are a little limited as we are still looking for many of the data and photo consent forms to be returned. We need these to be returned as soon as possible so we can share our learning with you on our class blog. Thanks**

P1M/W – Week Beginning 28/09

Good morning,

We hope you had a lovely long weekend and a restful break.

Reminders & Homework

Sounds             The 10 Best Ways to Help Kids Learn Phonics (Activities to Help Your Child Learn to Read!) | How to Learn

Last week, we learned the sounds ‘h’, ‘r’ and ‘m’. The links for the Jolly Phonics songs and actions relating to these sounds can be found on Teams. Please continue to practice all of the sounds at home as much as possible, as this will be highly beneficial to your child. We have added a template of sound cards to Teams – you may wish to print these out to use at home or alternatively make your own sound cards.

Sight Words          Sight Words – Mrs. Sheila Hacker – Butterfield Elementary

We have learned the sight words ‘the’, ‘and’, ‘of’,  ‘a’, ‘to’, ‘in’, ‘is’, ‘you’, ‘that’ and ‘it’ to date. The aim is for your child to be able to learn these words by sight, so that they are instantly recognisable, and to be able use them appropriately in an oral sentence. For homework, we would like you to practice these words with your child. This can be done by making individual flashcards for each of the words or trying to recognise them in books. We have provided a little more information on learning sight words on teams. Practicing little and often is the best method for helping your child to learn and retain their sight words.

Health and Wellbeing Target Wheel

Please continue to practice targets at home. Thank you for your help with these – we are seeing great progress with the childrens independence in class.

Term 1 Target Wheel

  1. Our outdoor learning sessions will be on  Wed, Thu and Fri of this week. Please ensure your child has suitable warm and waterproof clothing and footwear for these days.
  2.  Pupil of the Day compliments will be posted daily on Teams. You may wish to read through these with your child.
  3. Read & Munch is on Thursday. Your child can bring in a favourite book from home and a healthy snack to enjoy at this time.
  4. School will be closed this Monday 28th September.
  5. Here is the link to our school lunch options. If your child is having a school lunch, we ask that you discuss the options with them each day, so they are aware of what they are having before coming to school. We will then order their choice for them.
  6. If you have yet to do so, please return your parents night appointment slip.
  7. We would ask that all pupils have a change of clothing in their bag for any accidents. We only have a small supply of clothing and this is running low.

As always, if you have any questions please send us an email or catch us at the door in the morning.
