Classroom resource: jigsaw answers

From Martin Friel

Often, learners with dyslexia or literacy needs struggle with questions which require long paragraphs. An easy way to support learners would be to break down exemplar answers into a jigsaw with 4 pieces.

Rather than a large passage which can be off-putting, or heighten anxiety, the jigsaw task breaks an answer up into 4 short parts for learners to piece together. This shows how to structure to an exemplar answer in a more appealing way than one long paragraph.

The example below is from S3 Business Management. There were many jigsaw pieces however pupils had to find a stakeholder from the list and the corresponding pieces how they are interested in a business, how they can influence and whether they are internal or external.

This proved a successful way to teach how to answer questions on this topic.
