Eco School<\/strong><\/h3>\nMary Russell School is an \u2018Eco School\u2019. We received the first Green flag in June 2005 and have been successful in adding a further flag every two years. We have now received our sixth flag.<\/p>\n
This is an internationally recognised programme with opportunities to gather evidence in support of the journey to Excellence. There are seven elements to the programme: electing a committee, undertaking an environmental review, formulating an action plan, initiating an Eco code, linking to the curriculum, monitoring action and evaluating progress involving the whole school and the wider community.<\/p>\n
The topics available are Waste Minimisation, Health and Well-being, Biodiversity, School grounds, Energy, Water, Transport, Sustaining our World, Food in the Environment and Litter. Litter is always compulsory and together with any two additional topics must be covered in each cycle.<\/p>\n
When appropriate class work and large scale activities will be used to build up the portfolio of work presented as evidence over the two year cycle. We have enhanced the school grounds and undertook a whole school project was to collect 2 litre plastic bottles and construct a working greenhouse which is in use within the grounds. We have put in a garden area with benches, tree seats and raised flower beds.<\/p>\n
Primary pupils are actively involved in a proactive litter prevention programme around the school.<\/p>\n
Each year we take part in the Spring Clean, recycle stamps, grow food in the school and the Committee is always on the look out for the next big project.<\/p>\n
