Topics

Social Studies

Our Social Studies programme develops pupils’ knowledge and understanding of the world in which they live, both past and present. The subjects included in this area are spread right across the curriculum.

All classes undertake two social studies topics every session, each with a different subject emphasis. In addition to the topic studies, the children follow a science programme throughout the school.

The methods we use give many opportunities for other areas of the curriculum to be included, such as Technologies, RME, Health and Wellbeing, Expressive Arts, Literacy and English, Numeracy and Mathematics.

All classes undertake cross-curricular topics which adhere to the principles of Curriculum for Excellence.

Visits to places of educational interest are arranged whenever possible to allow the children the opportunity of seeing things a first hand.

Below are some of the examples of topics taught in 2018/2019

Primary Term 1 (2018) Term 3 (2019)
Primary 1 Langbank Village Dinosaurs
Primary 2/3 The Seashore The Romans
Primary 4/5 Rainforest Mary Queen of Scots
Primary 6/7 Scottish Parliament World War 2

Sciences

Science is often taught as a separate subject in topics such as Living Things, Forces and Energy and Earth and Space. Children are encouraged to carry out investigations, discuss possible solutions and the reasons for the outcomes. Science is usually taught in terms 2 and 4.

Expressive Arts

Our Expressive Arts curriculum fosters creativity and develops skills in music, drama and art and design.

All classes have regular opportunities to enjoy music by listening, singing and playing instruments. Primary 6 and 7 pupils have the opportunity to learn to play brass instruments.

Throughout the school, the children use a range of materials and techniques to produce interesting and attractive artwork. Examples of artwork displayed in classrooms and corridors have been much admired.

Many of the activities in drama arise from topic work, for example, role-playing or simulated interviews. We have also been involved, on several occasions, with the Paisley Arts Centre’s theatre workshops (PACE). All pupils will have an opportunity to participate in this year’s Christmas Nativity/Carol Service and School Show.

Religious and Moral Education

We follow a programme of Religious and Moral Education based on Curriculum for Excellence which develops moral and social values and an understanding of Christianity and other World Religions. We seek to encourage the development in the children of an attitude of mutual respect and tolerance for the views and culture of other people. Regular assemblies are held throughout the school year covering a wide variety of themes. RME is usually taught in term 2 and 4.

All pupils at P1-7 are given the opportunity to visit the church for a variety of school celebrations including our Easter Celebration, Christmas Service and Primary 7 Leavers Service.

Religious Observance

Our school is fortunate to have a close link with the local church. The minister assists with the Christianity element of Religious and Moral Education and provides opportunities for religious observance. Parents have the right to withdraw their child from religious observance and should inform the school in writing.

In addition, parents and carers from religions other than Christianity may request that their children may be permitted to be absent from school in order to celebrate recognised religious events. Only written requests detailing the proposed arrangements will be considered.

Technologies

In Technology, basic skills are taught at each level and these skills are then put in to practice to design, make and test a variety of tasks. The children work individually, in pairs or in cooperative groups.

Information and communication technology is part of the daily teaching and learning programme for all children. Children are taught basic computer skills in a variety of subjects including internet use on PC computers, netbooks and iPads. Pupils are encouraged to research information or work on programmes specific to their particular stage. There are programmes to cover most aspects of the curriculum and so children are able to take advantage of the computers to assist their learning across the curriculum.
