Numeracy across learning provides essential analytic, problem solving and decision making skills\u00a0across the curriculum. Mathematics plays an important role in our lives and in the lives of our children.\u00a0 It is used in everyday activities such as buying food and clothes, keeping time and playing games.<\/p>\n
In addition to developing basic number skills, doing sums and learning tables, the children also do work on the measurement of length, area, volume, weight and time, as well as studying aspects of shape and pattern.\u00a0 Much of this work is of a practical nature and staff use SEAL (Stages of Early Arithmetical Learning) techniques to support children’s speed and accuracy.<\/p>\n
Problem-solving activities are a regular feature of the maths programme, and gives scope for the children to apply the basic facts learned to the solution of either real or imaginary problems.\u00a0 They are challenged to think about what they are doing, to question and to explain.\u00a0 The class computers, calculators and active approaches to learning in maths all widen our pupils\u2019 mathematical horizons.<\/p>\n
The school follows the Renfrewshire Pathways programme and pupils are supported and challenged in mental maths through the use of SEAL ( Stages of Early Arithmetical Learning)<\/em> and Number talks.
