NUMERACY AND MATHEMATICS<\/p>\n
Mathematics is important in our everyday lives. It allows us to make sense of our world and to manage our lives. It plays a key role in areas such as science and technology. In Fordbank Primary School we aim to allow children to experience success in mathematics and to develop the confidence to take risks, ask questions and explore alternative solutions without worrying about getting things wrong. Across the stages we plan active learning which provide opportunities to observe, explore, investigate, experiment, play, discuss and reflect. We have engaged in high quality Professional Development to enhance our learning and teaching.\u00a0 All teachers consistently use the approaches and methodologies of SEAL (Stages of Early Arithmetical Learning) and Number Talks.\u00a0 We know that children learn in different ways and ensure that practical and visual resources are available at all stages across the school so that children can learn and understand maths and number in the way that suits them best.<\/p>\n

Numeracy is a vital skill that is important in everyday life. It is about being confident when solving problems, making decisions and analysing situations that involve numbers. They will develop problem solving capabilities through –

\n\u2022Explaining their thinking
\n\u2022Using relevant contexts and experiences
\n\u2022Using technology
\n\u2022Collaborating and learning independently<\/p>\n
In addition to teaching mathematics we plan to ensure that children develop their numeracy skills across the curriculum and teachers look for opportunities to make meaningful links with other areas of the curriculum, e.g. topic work.<\/p>\n
For the key aspects of numeracy, pupils are encouraged to track their own progress and set personal targets\/next steps which are discussed with their teachers and shared with parents\/carers.\u00a0 Teachers also track progress for each individual pupil and this is discussed at regular attainment tracking meetings where support needs are identified and strategies put in place to address any barriers to learning.<\/p>\n
