Remember the key rules when solving algebraic equations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You want to get the variable (the letter) on its own on one side of the equation. For example, <strong>y + 5 = 10<\/strong>. What do you need to do to get the y on its own? Subtract 5! <strong>y + 5 &#8211; 5 <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Remember that whatever you do to one side of the equation, you must do to the other&#8230; so it balances! <strong>y + 5 &#8211; 5 = 10 &#8211; 5<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Show all of your working, to record your thought process and understanding.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <strong>y + 5 = 10<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<strong>y + 5 &#8211; 5 = 10 &#8211; 5<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <strong>y = 5<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>For more complex or multi-step algebraic equations, take one step at a time and use the above rules.
