P7 Solo Talk – Hints and Tips

screen-shot-2016-10-15-at-13-35-22

You need to plan and prepare a talk on a subject of your choice. This talk should last between 2-3 minutes and you must be prepared to deliver it on Tuesday 22nd November. You may use props and/or visual aids but you must not make a Powerpoint with lots of writing . You may include photographs in a Powerpoint but this a talk you are delivering to the class (not reading from the slides). You will be given one hour in class to begin your research and then the further preparation and rehearsal is up to you!

Hints and Tips

  • Choose a topic which you are confident about – it is your choice so make sure you will have enough to talk about for 2-3 minutes.
  • Know your purpose – why did you choose this subject? Will it be interesting for your peers?
  • Know your audience – you may need to use technical or topical words but you are talking to your peers so make sure you explain it well.
  • Do research and make notes your topic – it should be clear you are explaining the subject in your own words.

Use humour and anecdotes – win your audience by making them laugh.

Please use the success criteria below to help you shape and rehearse your talk. This is what you will be assessed on.

Success Criteria:

  • Eye contact: the speaker should look at their audience (everyone) from time to time. Check to see they are listening to you.
  • Body language: try to stand still and look confident. No fidgeting about or staring at the floor. Use your hands to ‘talk’ but don’t overuse them.
  • Tone and pace of voice: try to use a clear voice which should naturally rise and fall when you are talking. No mumbling, whispering or speaking too fast.
  • Fluency: Try to talk for the full time without pausing or using fillers such as saying eh, ummmm.
  • Length of talk: you should rehearse and time your talk to ensure it is between 2-3 minutes.
  • Organisation of content: the information should be organised in a way that it makes sense and flows.
  • Use of notes/cue cards: headings and key points can be noted to aid memory and act as a prompt without the speaker reading the whole talk. You may not need to use notes but if you do, you should only be glancing at them, not reading directly from them.
  • Easy to understand and holds the audience’s attention: the information given should be easily understood by the audience. Even if the speaker is an expert on their subject, they should remember to explain it really clearly. If the audience doesn’t understand they will lose interest.
  • Use of visual aids: visual aids such as photographs, items of clothing or equipment related to the talk, can enhance a talk by keeping the audience’s attention and interest. For example, if the talk was about a favourite hobby and the child played golf, the visual aid might be a golf ball and club. If you have a prop, use it! Don’t pass it around while you are talking because people will stop paying attention to you.
  • Clear introduction, middle and ending: a clear introduction will tell the audience what the talk is about and it should ‘hook’ the audience. Try to avoid ‘I am going to talk about about…’ or ‘My solo talk will be about…’. It may also let the audience know why you have chosen the subject. The middle of your talk is the ‘meat’ of your talk and should contain interesting facts to keep the listeners attention. A conclusion is important to let the listener know that the talk is finished. It is a good chance to summarise the key points and thank the audience for listening.

Good afternoon everyone! I hope you have all had a fabulous October break so far. The weather has been relatively kind to those of us who stayed at home so I hope you have been out and about enjoying the dry days. Here is a rundown of your homework for this week. Please read the reminders as there are quite a few this week.

Spelling: Unit 15 or 22 should be completed, neatly, in your spelling jotter. Each word should be written out times. A creative spelling activity should be completed using ALL of your words. This task should be returned to school by Friday.

Please remember to practice your words throughout the week, NOT just when you are completing the task.

Book Detectives: Your Book Detectives homework will be issued on Thursday. It should be completed for Thursday 3rd November. Please remember that if you do not complete the task you will be unable to participate in the class lesson on this day.

Details of the task will be issued on Thursday.

Personal Reading Challenge: This term we will be completing a challenge to help increase the amount of reading you do each week. The challenge will be ongoing for the whole term. I will go over the finer details of the challenge with you in class on Monday.

Maths: Our maths homework will take a different format this term.  Most weeks you will have worded problems to complete. These problems will be posted on our class blog. I have included links below for you to use. Please click on the relevant group. If you are unable to access the blog, please ask for a paper copy of the questions.

Group 1

Group 2

Your answers should be completed, neatly, in your maths homework jotter. I will let you know on Monday (24th) which group you are in so that you know which questions to answer. Please cover your jotter for Friday.

I know many of you enjoy accessing the games on Mangahigh. Please continue to do so, if you wish, as additional practice is always worth doing.

Art: As part of our Brazil topic we will be looking at a Brazilian artist: Beatriz Milhazes. Next week in class we will be recreating some of her paintings. For homework this week I would like you to access the link below and familiarise yourself with her work. Some of the vocabulary used is a little tricky but please remember if you are unsure of what a word means, please use a dictionary (or ask) to check the definition.

You should then write a short paragraph (no more than 50 words) about Beatriz and her work. This should be in your own words as much as possible – DO NOT just copy directly from the text. Let me know your personal thoughts on her paintings. Think about the following questions when writing your paragraph.

  • When and where was she born?
  • What style of art does she create?
  • What do you think of it?
  • Why do you think that?
  • Is there a particular painting you like?
  • Why do you like it?

Beatriz Milhazes

You should leave your paragraph as a post on our blog and I will publish them all at the end of the week. If you are unable to post on the blog, please complete your paragraph on paper. This task should be completed for Friday.

Here are your reminders for this week.

  1. Please remember that our lunch menu has changed for this week only. The menu scheduled for Monday will now be served on Thursday which means Thursday’s menu will be served on Monday.
  2. You should all have taken your P.E. kit home at the end of last term to be washed. Please remember to bring it to school for our P.E. sessions on Tuesday and Friday.
  3. Some of you have still to return your “walking” consent forms. Please ensure it is returned to school as soon as we return from our October break as we have an upcoming visit to the library. If you have not returned your form, you will not be unable to join us.
  4. We require 2 parent helpers to come with us to the library next Tuesday (1st November). We will be leaving school about 10.00 am and returning for break at 11.00am. If someone at home is able to help, please leave a message on the blog or bring a note in your diary letting me know.

Enjoy the remainder of the October break. I look forward to hearing all of your stories. See you on Monday.

Good evening everyone! I hope you have had a great weekend. We have been very lucky with the weather and hopefully it will continue for our upcoming holiday.

The last week of term has arrived …… and what a quick term it has been. I hope you have enjoyed it as much as I have.

There is no written homework this week due to it being a short week for you all. However, I would like you to complete some personal reading at home. It will be very good practice for the personal reading challenge you will be taking part in next term. I would like you to choose a book of your choice, preferably fiction, and read at least 3 chapters for Thursday. I will be checking in with you to see which book you have chosen and how much you have read.

I would also like you to look over the photographs posted this term with someone at home and leave a message on the blog. The message can be from you, someone at home or both.  Let me know what you think of the activities we have been involved in this term. What have you enjoyed? What are you most proud of?

Here are your reminders for this week.

  4. If you have a copy of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory on DVD, please bring it in. Remember to check with someone at home before doing so.
  5. You will finish on Thursday at 3.15pm for the October break.

This task is due for Wednesday 28th September (not Thursday due to our trip to Stirling Castle). Please ensure it is completed to allow you to take part in the class lesson.

Maths3 challenges have been set up on Mangahigh for you to complete by Mrs Hughes. All games should be played. As always you should try to achieve the highest medal you can. This task should be completed for Thursday.

Topic: Please remember to continue working on your personal project AFTER your weekly homework has been completed. You should also be taking time to practice your presentation in front of an audience. Ask someone at home to listen to you.

To access the task sheet, please click here .

Here are your reminders for the coming week.

  1. As this is a short week you will only have P.E. on Tuesday. Please remember to take your kit home to be washed.
  2. Please remember to return your consent forms for our trip to Stirling Castle.
  3. It is our House European Language day on Thursday. It is a non-uniform day so please come to school in your house colours.
  4. It is a holiday weekend. School closes at 3.15pm on Thursday and reopens on Tuesday 27th.

Have a wonderful holiday weekend. I look forward to hearing your stories when I get back (and sharing mine). See you all soon.

P7 Book Detectives – Question Master & Summariser

We completed an activity in class to learn about the three different types of questions you can ask. They are:

  • Literal – the answer is literally there in the text!
  • Inferential – the answer is not explicitly written, but you can read the between the lines to find it.
  • Evaluative – you are using your own opinion, knowledge and personal experiences of the world to answer

For your Question Master job you need to ask six questions (two literal, two inferential and two evaluative) and give detailed answers to each question. Your answers should explain your answer with evidence (quotes, page numbers or your own personal experience) to support your answer.

See the example below to give you an idea of how you should complete the Question Master task.

Question Master Chapters 21-36

  1. Literal – What did Mr. Sir’s face look like after the Warden had scratched him?   Answer: p104 Mr. Sir’s face had swollen to the size of half a cantaloupe and it had dark-purple jagged lines running down his cheeks.
  2. Literal – Who hit Mr Pendanski with a shovel? Answer: Zero hit Mr Pendanski with his shovel (p139).
  3. Inferential – How was the rattlesnake feeling when ‘it’s tail was pointed upward, rattling’? Answer: p93 The rattlesnake was feeling threatened because Stanley was near him and rattlesnakes shake their tails to warn of predators.
  4. Inferential – How was Stanley feeling when he stole the truck? Answer: p147 Stanley was feeling desperate and panicked. He was desperate to find Zero because he was thinking about how he would be thirsty and close to death in the desert so he panicked and jumped in the truck!
  5. Evaluative – How do you think Stanley felt when Twitch was assigned Zero’s bed? Answer: I think Stanley would have felt like it was a bit insensitive because he was already missing Zero and now a new boy just slipped into his place without a blink of an eye.
  6. Evaluative – Why do you think Kate Barlow kept finding jobs for Sam to do? Answer: I think Kate kept finding jobs for Sam because she enjoyed his company and wanted him to hang around, which is why she eventually fell in love with him.

Summariser

Literacy Outcome: To show my understanding across different areas of learning, I can identify and consider the purpose and main ideas of a text and use supporting detail. LIT 2-16a

A summariser job should:

  • explain the main events of the chapters
  • answer the 5 Ws (who? what? when? where? why?)
  • be approximately one A4 page in length (depending on the size of your handwriting)
  • not bother with insignificant details of the plot
  • be written in your own words

Example of a summary of Chapters 1-5

The scene of the bleak Camp Green Lake is set. It is a desert, not a lake at all. There is no shade except over the Warden’s hammock. There are rattlesnakes and scorpions that live in holes dugs by the campers. But most worrying, are the deadly yellow-spotted lizards. If one bites you, you get to leave the camp… but unfortunately will die.

The reason “campers” go to Camp Green Lake is made clear; it is a juvenile correction facility for boys. As punishment each boy must dig a hole (five feet deep and five feet across) every day in the desert heat. Supposedly their hard work will turn a “bad boy” into a “good boy.” Stanley Yelnats, a chubby fifteen-year-old boy from a poor family, chose Camp Green Lake over going to jail. He thought it would be like a summer camp, something he had never before had the opportunity to experience.

Stanley rides the un-airconditioned bus to Camp Green Lake handcuffed to the armrest. Stanley tries to pretend that he is going to Camp Fun and Games, a place he had imagined while playing with his toys when he was younger.

At home Stanley had no friends and was bullied, even by his teachers who unintentionally could embarrass him about his weight. Stanley is a good kid and is actually innocent of the crime for which he is being sent to Camp Green Lake. As is the joke in his family, Stanley blames his misfortune on his no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather. His great -great-grandfather had reportedly stolen a pig from a one-legged gypsy and brought a curse down upon the family forever.

Stanley’s father was Stanley Yelnats III, making the Stanley in the novel Stanley Yelnats IV. Stanley’s father was an unsuccessful inventor, looking for a use for old trainers. Stanley’s great-grandfather, Stanley Yelnats I, made money in the stock market, but was robbed of everything and left stranded in the desert by the outlaw Kissin’ Kate Barlow. Unfortunately all of the Stanleys to date had bad luck, though they always remained hopeful. Upon arriving at Camp Green Lake, Stanley notes, “hardly anything was green.”

Good afternoon everyone!I hope you are enjoying the sunshine today.  It is homework time again. Keep reading for a rundown of your homework and reminders for the coming week.

Spelling: Please complete list 12 or19 in your spelling jotter. Each word should be written out 3 times and a creative spelling activity for each word should also be completed. If you are choosing to use the newspaper creative activity, you should only do so for 3 or 4 words.

Please ensure your presentation has been completed to a high quality. Also, please ensure any corrections are being completed each week. This task should be returned to school by Thursday.

Book Detectives: Please read chapters 17-19 (inclusive) at home. Once you have done so, write a short summary of what has happened in these chapters. You should also choose your favourite part for your Illustrator segment. A detailed drawing should be completed in your jotter. Be ready to explain to your group members what your illustration represents and why it is your favourite part. You should also choose a short paragraph to read aloud to your group members.

This task should be completed for Thursday. Please ensure this task is completed as otherwise you will be unable to participate fully in the class lesson.

Maths: I have set up 3 challenges on Mangahigh for you to complete. As always, you should play the games as often as possible to achieve the highest medal you can. I know that some of you are thoroughly enjoying playing the games on Mangahigh, however please remember to limit the time you are playing: DO NOT let Mangahigh take over your life!

There are also some of you who are NOT playing the games at all. If this continues you will be issued with worksheets to complete instead which are a lot less fun to do. Please remember anyone who is unable to access Mangahigh at home may use the IT Suite for a short time at the beginning of lunchtime.

These challenges should be completed by Friday.

Topic: You have now had your Personal Project task for a week. I will be checking with you this week to see what area of the Scottish Wars of Independence you have decided to research. Please remember to use your time wisely and do not leave everything to the last minute.

Please remember that if I can supply any resources from school you just need to ask.

Here are your reminders for this week.

  1.  P.E. will be on Tuesday and Friday. Please ensure you have a full kit for both days: shorts, change of top and trainers.
  2. Please return your consent form for our trip to Stirling Castle as soon as possible.
  3. If you have not already done so, please return your annual data check form.
  4. All homework jotters (Spelling and Book Detectives) should now be covered. If not, please do so. If you require paper, please ask as I can supply you with some from class.

P7 Spelling Homework Feedback

After marking your first P7 Spelling Homework, there are a few points I’d like to clarify. In general, they were a good standard with neat handwriting, well laid out and the sections completed correctly. So well done. However, there were a few common mistakes I’d like to correct:

  • One list/unit per fortnight. Quite a lot of you had completed Unit/List 1 and 2. You only complete one per fortnight .e.g. the spelling rule we are focussing on. The reason you sometimes have more than one unit on a spelling sheet is to save paper.
  • You must write the date in the margin (2.9.16) and an appropriate title .e.g. Unit 1 ‘ac-‘ ‘ad-‘. ‘Spelling Homework’ is not specific enough because it will all be spelling homework in your Spelling Homework jotter!
  • Please write the sub-headings of each section. This will help you to check you have completed them all.
  • Please read the instructions carefully to ensure you are completing the task correctly. A lot of you never completed each section correctly. Please see the example below to check how it should be completed.
  • Section 3 – Fill in the missing words should have every sentence copied and completed in your jotter AND choose one of the spelling words to write one sentence of your own.
  • Please correct any mistakes. Remember the marking code.
