Spelling: Your child will receive 12 or18 spelling words per week. These will be written in their spelling jotter. Your child should write these words twice using the SACAWAC (say and cover and write and check) method. Your child should also complete 3 sentence using their spelling words and an active spelling task. If your child uses the Nessy programme, they can choose to complete either sentences or the activity and use the remaining time for Nessy at home. Spelling words will be tested weekly on a Friday.
Numeracy: Your child will receive one piece of numeracy homework a week. This will be given on a Tuesday to be completed by Friday. This homework will reinforce learning that has been taking place in class. Numeracy homework will come in a variety of styles. The most common of which are:
- Written homework to be completed on a worksheet/in a homework jotter.
- ‘Sumdog’ challenges that are set to focus on the learning in class.
- Practise of ‘beat that’ mental maths skills.
Some helpful websites for literacy:
Primary 6/5 will take part in Guided Reading. This consists of 4 reading sessions per week. Throughout the week your child will have supported reading time with the teacher; personal reading time and will take part in a variety of reading activities to further their learning. This aims to allow each child to receive increased personal support with their reading.
Please ask your child to tell you about their books and summarise what they have read.
Primary 6/5 will be exploring a range of imaginative, functional and personal writing this block. They will be exploring these genres and learn how to adapt their reader to meet the purpose of their genre that week. The children will continue to focus on the use of VCOP (vocabulary, connectives, openers and punctuation) to improve their writing. Primary 6/5 will continue to work towards individual writing targets and use this with each writing piece they complete in class.
Primary 6/5 will continue to use ‘Jolly Grammar’ for both spelling and reading. They will explore a variety of different spelling patterns and further their understanding of key grammatical concepts.
