Welcome to Primary 6!
Here you will find class information for the year and any class updates. Our class teachers for this year are Miss Palmer (Monday, Tuesday AM, Wednesday & Friday) and Mrs Thompson (Tuesday PM & Thursday).
Start of school day – 8:50
Break – 10:40
Lunch – 12:10
End of school day – 14:50
Our gym days will take place on a Tuesday after break and Thursday afternoon. We are working with Active schools each Tuesday and Mrs Thompson takes us for gym on a Thursday. We are hoping to keep enjoying gym outside so please remember to wear warm clothes and bring a waterproof jacket.
Homework will begin on the 20th October. All homework will be completed on our class TEAMS page. Miss Palmer will have paper copies of any homework for those that may need it. We will be completing one piece of numeracy homework, one piece of literacy homework and have pages to read in our books each week.
This year we have been looking at place value. We have enjoyed different activities which have broadened our knowledge of the place value line. We have also learned about decimals and have been learning to identify tenths and hundredths. Throughout the week we are also practicing our mental maths skills and taking part in number talks to share our strategies.
We are focusing on personal and imaginative writing this year. So far, we have created letters to our future selves, letters to writing buddies in the class and also developed characterisation in our writing.
We are using one of our literacy slots each week to explore different grammar skills. So far, we have learnt about homophones, synonyms and antonyms. We are using different strategies to develop our grammar skills.
We are using one of our literacy slots to learn a new spelling pattern each week. We are also completing spelling starters throughout the week to practice our skills.
We have three slots for guided reading each week. Each group will read their guided reading books as well as read with Miss Palmer throughout the week. During the other slots we are completing different activities to help improve our reading skills. Each day after lunch we are given specific time to read our library or accelerated reading books.
This year we have had a focus on health and wellbeing. We have been learning about growth mindsets and big deal, little deal. As a class we have been creating resources to promote these areas of health and wellbeing. We have also begun created a ‘Feelings Folder’ with resources we can use to think about our thoughts and feelings. At the end of each week we have been reflecting on how our week has went and how we can move forward.
We decided to take a class vote surrounding our new topic. Primary 6 decided that they would like to learn more about issues in 2020. We are going to begin researching events in 2020 and create a fact file project. We have also decided that as this is research project, we are going to run a competition for the top three final projects!
