Parental information

We believe our parents are an important part of our rights community and journey.

We produced a leaflet below which outlines our focus as a Rights Respecting School in promoting young people’s voices and showcasing our commitment to upholding a respectful ethos and undertaking responsibilities to ensure others feel respected also.  If you wish to attain a copy of this please speak to Mrs Kajla.

As a Rights Respecting School we focus on the key stages of campaigning and promoting the voices of our young pupils. Children are given opportunities to write to key political figures and with the support of outreach and UNICEF resources, we learn about the responsibilities we have in supporting the world. Central to this is climate change. Pupils have opportunities to explore the impact of weather on agriculture, homes and nature with an opportunity to talk about current affairs in detail and raise appropriate funds.

Being a respectful citizen means that we understand the causes and consequences of racism, discrimination and sectarianism. We focus on empowering our pupils to challenge this and be prepared as a citizen in a multi-cultural society. Pupils have had opportunities to work with organisations such as Racism is the Red Card and Refuwegee as a means of understanding and appreciating differences and uniqueness both on a local and global scale. Refuweegee has taught our children about the lifestyle of asylum seekers around the world and the challenges they face. Many pupils have had the opportunity to write to them ensuring they feel welcome in Scotland and our communities.

Our rights steering group have been presenting to our new Primary 1 parents at an information session. They talked about our rights journey and taught the parents about rights.

Our Rights committee have been working hard throughout the year to share their knowledge surrounding the UNCRC and children’s rights. We have created a quiz for parents and pupils to test their knowledge about children’s rights.  We would love if you could try out our quiz by clicking the link below:

Here are a collection of quotes from our parents regarding Arkleston’s commitment to promoting rights and why they believe learning about the UNCRC is important:

Our parent council have been an important part of our rights journey and have highlighted the importance of learning about Children’s rights in school for their children:

“It is good that my child has been part of a rights respecting school  as it is important for children to be aware of their rights and to respect others rights. It is also a good opportunity for children/teachers to build a mutual respecting relationship which will set the foundations for them in later life.” (Parent council lead)

The more we learn, the brighter we shine!
