Summer is fading:<\/span>
\nThe leaves fall in ones and twos<\/span>
\nFrom trees\u00a0bordering<\/span>
\nThe\u00a0new<\/span>\u00a0recreation ground.<\/span>
\nIn the hollows of afternoons<\/span>
\nYoung mothers assemble<\/span>
\nAt swing and sandpit<\/span>
\nSetting free their children<\/span>.<\/p>\n

Behind them, at intervals,<\/span>
\nStand husbands in skilled trades<\/span>,
\nAn estateful of washing,<\/span>
\nAnd the albums, lettered
\nOur Wedding, lying<\/span>
\n<\/span>Near the television:<\/span>
\nBefore them, the wind
\nIs ruining their courting-places<\/span><\/p>\n

That are still courting-places<\/span>
\n(But the lovers are all in school),<\/span>
\nAnd their children,\u00a0so intent on
\nFinding more unripe acorns,<\/span>
\nExpect to be taken home.<\/span>
\nTheir beauty has thickened.<\/span>
\nSomething is pushing them
\nTo the side of their own lives.<\/span><\/p>\n
