Travelling Ted

P1G and P1M have been very excited to meet ‘Travelling Ted’ and his Tardis to help them learn about the past.  With Travelling Ted we have enjoyed the Millennium party after he visited us from the year 2000; we even got to see Big Ben strike midnight.  We learned about the Millennium bug and even got to explore the technology from 17 years ago…the boys and girls were shocked to hear that there were no tablets!!!  From the year 2003, Travelling Ted visited us after his last flight on Concorde.  We discovered that the Concorde was the fastest passenger plane and had to cover our ears when we listened to the sonic boom.  More recently, Travelling Ted made a journey a little closer to home; we have been learning about Hill Primary School before we moved to our new campus in 2009.  The children were surprised at the differences between old Hill Primary and Newhill Primary School; however, through our travels we have found some items from old Hill stored away at Newhill…the boys and girls wondered if any of their parents would remember the old school bell?!

Minibeast Safari

P1G and P1M have been busy learning about minibeasts.  The boys and girls have created their own minibeast fact files; finding information about their appearance, diets, and habitats.  We also went on a minibeast safari around school to try and find any live minibeasts!  In co-operative groups, the boys and girls designed and made minibeast hotels to encourage minibeasts to visit our butterfly garden.  We will be putting the minibeast hotels out in the butterfly garden during the last week of term and are hoping to find some new creepy crawly friends on our return from the holidays.

Fire fighters to the rescue!

The boys and girls in P1 were very excited to have a visit from the fire fighters at Blairgowrie Fire Station yesterday!  Not only did the pupils get to meet the fire fighters and learn more about how they help us, they also got to explore the fire engine.  The boys and girls loved sitting in the fire engine and trying on the different items of uniform.  During a question and answer session at the end of the visit, it was clear that the pupils learned a lot from their visit!  A huge thank you to the fire fighters for coming in.

Primary 1 have been very busy exploring outdoors, this has included learning about Shanarri and how to be safe!  This term, we have focussed on safety in school, playground, water and how to cross the road safely.  We have also taken our language and maths activities outdoors to create sounds and numbers.  This was linked to our book study on ‘Mouse’s First Night at Moonlight School’, whereby the boys and girls went on a number trail and worked co-operatively to create a 0-10 number line similar to the one in Miss Moon’s classroom!
