COURSE DESCRIPTION

Media is an exciting and engaging subject to study. This course offers opportunities to analyse and create media texts. You will gain knowledge of the purpose, audience and context of media and its role within society. You will develop skills to plan, research, create and evaluate your own productions. You will develop an appreciation of the opportunities and challenges that occur in the media industry. The course will provide opportunities to develop both theoretical knowledge of the media and the ability to create your own media production.

 

ASSESSMENT

To gain National 5, learners must pass the two Units and the Course Assessment (Assignment, Case Study and Question Paper). The Course Assessment will be graded A to D.

 

The Course Assessment consists of :

  • Analysing Media Content

In this Unit the learner will develop the skills to analyse media content. This provides the learner with the opportunity to develop knowledge and understanding of the key aspects of media literacy central to the detailed analysis of media content. This will be done through the medium on film. The learner will analyse fiction and non-fiction feature films, trailers etc.

  • Creating Media Content

In this Unit the learner will develop the skills to create media content and evaluate the production process. This provides the learner with the opportunity to develop knowledge and understanding of the key aspects of media literacy central to creating media content. This will be done through the medium of film. The learner will plan, create and evaluate a production based on an agreed brief.

  • Question Paper

The question paper focuses on analysis of familiar media content.

 

PROGRESSION

Success at National 5 Media allows progression to Higher Media.
