POETIC TECHNIQUES // SIMILES AND METAPHORS

We’re just about to get stuck in to our Scottish Texts. This year, we’ll be studying Duffy poetry.

I thought it was important that we revise some techniques before we study the poems that we will ultimately write up answers for during the exam.

Today our focus was on similes and metaphors.

REMEMBER: Three big questions

  • What is being compared? (the real thing)
  • What is it being compared to? (the imagined thing)
  • What effect does that have? (what impact is the writer trying to achieve?

Today we’re looking at martial provided by the SQA that will give you an idea of what they want to see and how it will be marked.
