POETIC TECHNIQUES // SIMILES AND METAPHORS

We’re just about to get stuck in to our Scottish Texts. This year, we’ll be studying Duffy poetry.

I thought it was important that we revise some techniques before we study the poems that we will ultimately write up answers for during the exam.

Today our focus was on similes and metaphors.

REMEMBER: Three big questions

  • What is being compared? (the real thing)
  • What is it being compared to? (the imagined thing)
  • What effect does that have? (what impact is the writer trying to achieve?

CREATIVE WRITING // STILL STUCK FOR IDEAS?

We’ve completed a variety of tasks to get you thinking about your own stories. If you’re still struggling for an idea, here’s some things that might help.

BBC Bitesize N5 Creative:  Notes on what the SQA want to see from creative writing. Some ideas for developing plot, character and setting.

Creative Writing Prompts: Some stems of ideas you can respond to. Some much more sensible than others here, be careful with what you select.

Task: Pick a few details about your character (in green) and then write about some of their memories (in yellow). This might give you some ideas to work with or even a full short story. You can put your character in a situation where they are reflecting back on their life.

FOLIO // UNDERSTANDING STANDARDS // SQA

Today we’re looking at martial provided by the SQA that will give you an idea of what they want to see and how it will be marked.

The resources are available to the public and can be found here: http://www.understandingstandards.org.uk/Subjects/English

Although we are looking at folio just now, there’s plenty here for other aspects of the course that show examples of good answers for other areas.

CREATIVE WRITING // CHARACTER

harry

We have been working on development of characters. We discussed how JK Rowling fully developed Harry and his friends in her series. If you need a reminder for how to develop your own characters – the mind map is below.

REMEMBER: SQA will expect to see DEVELOPED character, plot and setting for a good grade at N5.
