Orienteering

Well done to P5-7 for taking part in the inter-school orienteering championships at Strathallan today. The weather was being typically Scottish providing a lovely grey backdrop with a sprinkling of rain. The weather however did not dampen the enthusiasm of the children who all did extremely well. Extra congratulations to Straun and Donald who came 3rd overall out of a total of 96 teams.

Curling @ Dewars

We have been learning how to play the game of Curling at the ice rink in Perth. Curling is a game played on ice and you need to make sure you have very clean shoes otherwise you won’t be allowed on. We learned how to throw the stones correctly and how to sweep to keep the stones moving. We even got to share the ice with the current Scottish and European Champions!

Scots Poetry

We have been learning Scots poems with Mr Robb in preparation for our recital on Friday this week. we have had lots of fun learning new Scots words and saying our poems in class. Check back later this week to see how we got on.

The poems we are learning are called:

  • P5 – Ma Plooks by H Marshall
  • P6 – The Magic Pizza by Alison Fitt
  • P7 – A Dug a Dug by Bill Keans

The Living World

We are looking at the living world in our community in Forgandenny. Much of the learning will take place in our school grounds, the park and local wooodlands. Here are some of the questions and some of the things  we hope to find the answers to in the next few weeks.

What we would like to find out about?

  • Why does ivy grow on wall? Joe
  • What are the most common trees in the school grounds – Jennifer, Joanna, Amy
  • What are the best materials for building shelters in the woods – Struan and Angus
  • What are the  trees in our school garden? Ailsa and Sarah G
  • Are there any rare plants in the school grounds? Struan
  • Why do leaves fall off in Autumn? Catriona
  • How long does it take a leaf to shrivel up after it has been picked? Amy
  • Can we find out the age of a tree without chopping it down? Caitlin

How we will do this?

  • Watch documentaries on TV
  • Blogs about wildlife
  • Carry out our own surveys
  • Libraries
  • Talks from experts e.g. Woodland Trust
  • School trips
  • School walk – adventure
  • Internet
  • Family and friends
  • Scout Hill walk
  • General knowledge
  • Carrying out Experiements
