Making Christmas special for the homeless

P1/2 has been reading Tabby McTat as part of their Julia Donaldson topic.  They have been thinking about how some people having no family or place to stay at Christmas.  This made P1/2 a bit sad and they wanted to help.

Mrs Duffy has been in touch with CATH House in Perth to ask if there is anything we could do to make Christmas special for homeless people.  Here are some of the ideas P1/2 has.

Max:  We could give them the presents we don’t need.

Ellie: We could make them pictures.

Olly: We could give them a blanket.

Hazel: We could make them party hats.

Sophia: We could give them magic reindeer food so santa could come to them.

Logan: We could make some decorations.

Nell: We could get food for them for their Christmas lunch.

Eve: We could make Christmas pancakes.

Logan: We could make cakes.

Charlie: We could make Christmas pudding.

Alex: We could give a cooking book to the people in the kitchen.

Luke: We could make cards.

Max: We could give them a home.

Ellie: We could make games for them to play.

Sophia: We could make crackers.

Emelia: We could give them tea and juice.

Mrs Duffy will ask Ms Lyttle if she has any spare time to come into class and help the children make a Christmas cake.  We hope our donations will help to make Christmas ‘a happy time’ – Sophia!

Fire Safety Talk

Logan – I learned that firefighters wear a special fire proof scarf over their head.

Luke – I didn’t know their boots were special boots.

Ellie – I learned that they wear a helmet.

Eve – I learned that you need a special disc to find smoke in your house (smoke detector).

Olly – I learned that they put some masks on so if it is really smoky and they cant breathe, there is oxygen to help in the tanks.  A bit like divers.

Callum – I learned that they use special knives to cut through seatbelts in car crashes.

Max – Their boots have got hard toes so if something falls, their foot wont get hurt.

Sophia – They are steel toe caps.  My Daddy has got them.

Archie – I learned that firemen don’t always use water.  They sometimes use foam.

Our visit to SCAA

At last we are back up and running and I can now post some of the photos from our visit to Scone SCAA.  We had a wonderful visit with the place to ourselves and the full attention of paramedics Robin and Craig and Pilot Captain Clark.

The children got up close to the helicopter and were able to ask all their questions.  We also had the chance to try on the helmets and looked very sweet in our oversized fluorescent jackets!

We handed over our donation to SCAA and have since received a letter thanking us for this.  Thank you to all who donated.

Visit from Doctor Ross

P1/2 was very lucky to get a special visit from Doctor Ross (Luke’s dad!) this afternoon.  He brought lots of interesting things for us to look at and told us all about the human body.  We saw inside his doctor’s bag and he even brought a prescription for Ben Bear!

Max – The blue blood vessels take the blood up to the heart and the red ones take the blood away

Alex – I learned some bone names

Olly – I learned that the spikey bits are on the spine and there are discs that can slip and hit the nerve roots

Ellie – I learned that you have a tail bone and you can hurt it

Logan – I learned that we have a humerous

Nell – A doctor makes you feel better

Eve – There was a thing to make your leg bounce (reflex hammer)

Tegan – Doctors look after people and make us well

Sami – He brought a blood tube

Logan – Dr Ross had a monkey…

Emelia -… to cheer people up

Hazel – …and not worry them

Archie – He brought a syringe for making people go to sleep when they are doing something really sore

Visit from a vet

Yesterday Lindsay (Charlie’s Mum) came into class to talk to us about being a vet.  This answered one of the questions from our learning wall.  Max and Eve performed an important operation on a special patient!

Here is what we learned:

Ellie – Sometimes a vet needs to pin an animal’s bones if they were broken

Logan – I learned that dogs like to eat stones and they need an operation to get them out

Archie – I learned that raisins are poisonous for dogs

Olly – I learned that fleas like to live in people’s houses in their carpets

Luke – I learned grapes are poisonous for dogs

Emelia – X-rays show bones

Charlie – The special scanner helps you find your dog if it is lost

Eve – I learned that you can pop a little thing on dogs necks to help it
