That’s why, at Fairview, we use a total communication approach. This means using a combination of methods tailored to each individual, so that everyone can express themselves and understand others in the way that works best for them.

Whether it’s speech or sign, movement or gesture, sound, art, or touch, total communication helps break down barriers and makes meaningful connection possible.

What is Total Communication?

Total communication is about finding the right mix of communication methods for each person. This approach supports better understanding, stronger relationships, and more effective conversations.

It’s not just about the method—it’s also about the environment. Creating the right setting can make all the difference. This might include:

Adjusting lighting

Reducing background noise

Changing your position to improve visibility or sound

Minimising distractions

Communication Methods

People may use a mix of the following types of communication:

Non-verbal communication: Body movements, breathing patterns, eye pointing, textures, smells, temperature changes, routines, and intensive interaction can all help someone understand what’s happening or what’s coming next.

Language-based communication: This includes speech, lip reading, large print, braille, and sign systems such as British Sign Language (BSL) and Makaton. These may be used independently or through touch, such as on-body or hand-under-hand signing.

Symbol systems: Real objects, object symbols, photos, line drawings, PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System),

Each person will use a unique combination of these methods based on their preferences and needs. At Fairview, we work closely with individuals to identify what works best for them and adapt our communication accordingly.

Connecting Through Total Communication Everyone needs to feel connected—but the way we connect can look very different from person to person.
