Have a great summer from the Green team!
The last post 2010/11
This is the last Green Team post before the Summer holidays. Here are our thoughts this year.
Chris – My favourite thing in the Green Team was deweeding and replanting the boxes at the front of the school.
James- My favourite thing about eco this year was going to Brig in Bloom and planting.
Kai- My favourite part was planting bulbs in the school grounds.
Jennifer- My favourite thing in the eco group this year was feeding the birds all through the winter.
Euan- My favourite part in eco was planting the courgettes.
Josh- My favourite thing was Mr Donnachie because he has been a very good teacher in eco.
Sacha- My favourite thing was feeding the birds in the garden.
Eco 2010/11 -The Challanges
This year we have had many weather related challanges due to snow and rain
In November the school had very bad snow, due to this we could not get to the garden for over five weeks!. When the snow finally melted we discoved that many of the beautiful plants had died.
In May the school had really bad weather. The wild wind brought down many trees incuding the old apple tree in the stage area.
Not all are problems are due to the weather. Our video birdbox still has nothing in it maybe next year we will be third time lucky!
Eco 2010/2011 – Our Successes
It has been a very busy year in the Green Team – Here are a few of our successes.
- Blogging was one of our biggest successes as you can see!
- Our veggies are flourishing considering the fact they were battered by heavy winds.
- The garden is beautiful thanks to the parents for all their hard work at weekends. We take our hats off to you!
- The birds have stayed around only because of our hard work and your donations. Thanks!
- The birds also stay around because of our brand new bird feeders.
Those are some of our main successes but we’ve done lots more things over this year – check out our blogs for all the details
Brig in Bloom
Gardening in the drizzle!
Today the Green Team went out to the garden to plant courgettes. Firstly we put the soil in the plant pots then we made some holes for the plants to go in and lastly we put the plants in the pots. We planted nine courgettes and each of us will take them home for summer.
Summer Veggies
The Eco team would like to say a big thanks to everyone who looked after our veggies over the Easter Break – we have planted the beans in the veggie plot and the Health Groups are going to look after them now they have been planted. This week we are going to harvest some rhubarb, plant some of our baby courgettes and investigate growing pumpkins (hopefully ready for harvest in time for Halloween)
Assembling the Bird Feeders
Today we built two new bird hanging stations for our new feeders. These were the ones we all chose in December before the snow came. We got:
- 1 deluxe feeding station
- 1 dining station
- 2 huge seed feeders
- 1 big peanut feeder
- 1 fat ball feeder and 50 fat balls
- a bunch of bird treats for our feathered friends
- a large box of peanuts
Litter picking in the rain!
This month sees the start of the Keep Scotland Tidy campaign. At Forgandenny we decided to clean up the school garden as it was in a dreadful mess after the long, cold winter.
We nearly filled two black rubbish bags and we found cartons of juice, a full packet of sweets, yoghurts, old nails, hose attachments, a cable, crisp packet and even a some cans. All in all not a very tidy school playground.
Two photographers also took pictures of untidy spots in the school grounds. We are going to use the pictures to show people the spots and hopefully make them look much better. Check out the pictures below.
Creativity in the Green Team
Today in the Green Team we updated not only this blog but also the Green Team board with pictures of our new bird feeders and our part of the website.
