Investigating whether or not different types of fruit float or sink. IN FRENCH!
We have been learning to “upcycle” materials that would have otherwise been thrown out, to create 3D models of the Titanic (or it’s life boats). We learned lots about design and overcoming problems through trail and error or by responding to feedback.
Here are our finished models:
As part of our IDL work on The Titanic, we measured out the lifesize Titanic in the field opposite our school. We used a trundle wheel (which some of us had never used before) to accurately measure the 269m length! A big THANK YOU to Mr and Mrs Sands for allowing us the use of their field for this.
Lucy (P7) reports:
“We went to Megginch Castle and learnt about the first women marine engineer called Victoria Drummond. We got a tour around the castle where she lived with her family. Her dad worked for Queen Victoria and Queen Victoria became her god mother. In the castle there were a lot of old things like the sled Napoleon used to escape, pictures of her family, old music playing stuff and secret passages (we even got to go inside one of them). Victoria knew she wanted to do marine engineering so she went and did her exam, but they did not want to let her pass it because she was a woman. Instead of failing her they failed every one. But she did not give up she did her exam 37 times! before they let her pass it. We looked round the rooms we even went into the dungeon! After we had finished looking inside we went outside – we went and saw her grave and the little church beside it. I really enjoyed the trip and would like to learn a lot more about Victoria Drummond.”
When some of the trees in our orchard were damaged, we picked the fruit from the broken branches to stop it from going to waste. The apples we picked were a little too bitter to eat raw, so we decided to use the apples and the pears we picked to make crumbles. We learned food hygiene, knife safety, measuring and baking skills.
Anna (P3) reports:
“In the school’s bird box the mum has been making a nest. When the nest was finished the mum got cosy and the dad came in to feed the mum. Then a little bit later the mum had eggs. In a week or so the eggs hatched. There were seven eggs but now only two chicks are there. Now is there only going to be one?”
Lucy (P2) reports:
“We have a bird box in our playground and we attached it onto a camera so we can see what is happening inside. We had 7 eggs this year but only six of them hatched, then it was down to four, now it’s two.
The male gave the female food and some for the babies.”
Ellen (P4) reports:
“Lots of people have been going to music camp. It is a camp for kids that play an instrument. There are lots of different groups, like elementary string orchestra and junior string orchestra. They went together and made a big orchestra. There are lots of groups that go together. Bea, Lucy6 and I went together; Cara, Molly and Layla went together. Lucy6 and Bea play the violin and I play the cello. Layla plays the c claret and Molly plays the b flat claret and Cara plays the oboe. Miss Young teaches Molly, Layla and Cara. Mr Young is the head of the music camp. Mr Young also teaches Bea and Lucy6.”
Bea (P4) reports:
“We have been having bikeabiliaty at school from 2pm till 3pm. The first 2 weeks we were all in the same group but for the rest of the weeks we are in different groups. In the playground there is me, Lucy M, Anna and Layla and the group on the road has 4 people in it too. They are Lucy L, Cara, Molly and Ellen. We have been dong it for 4 weeks.
The little group have been working with Mrs Legge.”
Molly (P7) reports:
“On Friday the 22nd of April people came from the community to help us to sew together the squares that everybody in the community had made.
Everybody that came to the school to sew together the squares got paired up with one of the pupils. Once everybody was paired up with an adult all the pupils chose twelve squares to make into a blanket. There were lots of different colours and textures such as knitted squares and crocheted squares.
Our adult helper helped us to sew together the squares. We did a blanket that was three squares by four squares. At the end of the day me and my partner had almost finished our blanket we only needed to sew two more sides together and sew in all the tails.
The blankets were for the refugees to use as comfort blankets. We are also going to send some money to the refugees for food, clothes, shelter and water.”
Lucy (P6) reports:
“Blankets for Babies is something where we all knit squares and make it into a blanket for the refugees. Because it would be quite hard to make them into really big blankets we decided to just make them into comfort blankets.
Lots of people came and we all helped sew the squares together. Everyone worked with a different person from the community. I worked with Mrs Legge. We crocheted the squares together but have not finished it yet.
Everyone had lots of fun and we will carry on doing it in class.

On Thursday 21st April, Abernyte Primary went to Day of Song. We had been learning the songs for it. When we got there we got our seats and they started the songs. In the morning we learnt the songs as a group and we also did a fun warm-up. We sang all the songs and we all enjoyed it. After we had a break we sang more songs. Then one of the people on the stage said about they need two people from each school after lunch.
We went to the North Inch to have our lunch. When we were having our lunch we saw Elise. It was really weird seeing her because I had not seen her in ages. Once we had finished our lunch we went back to the concert. We sat down then Molly and I went to the Norie Miller suite. We got told we had to show our sign when our amount of money was said. Once it was finished we went back to our seats and we sang all the songs once more.
