Do you ask a question?\u00a0 Do you get lots of irrelevant results when you do this?<\/p>\n<p>When you search for words or phrases in a search engine, it searches for ALL the words except <a href=\"https:\/\/xpo6.com\/list-of-english-stop-words\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">stop words<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>horses <del>and<\/del> ponies <del>of<\/del> <del>the<\/del> British<\/em>\u00a0<em>Isles<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If you typed the above search into\u00a0 a search engine you will get results for:\u00a0<em>horses; ponies; british; isles<\/em> as well as combinations of those words. This means you may get a lot of irrelevant results. When searching for specific information you really need to be specific in your search. You also don&#8217;t need to type in words such as <em>and; of; in; a; an; am; are; at; the;\u00a0<\/em>and so on as the search engine ignores them.<\/p>\n<p>Use <a href=\"http:\/\/newslit.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Eight-Tips-to-Google-Like-a-Pro_2021_FINALVERSION.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Eight Tips to Google Like a Pro<\/strong><\/a>, from the <a href=\"https:\/\/newslit.org\/educators\/resources\/eight-tips-to-google-like-a-pro\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>News Literacy Project<\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em> It will give you tips on effective searching in Google, but these tips usually apply in other search engines as well. (NB. There are plenty of others out there. Why not try:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bing.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bing<\/a> &#8211; does collect your data<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/duckduckgo.com\/?natb=v278-2__&amp;cp=atbhc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Duck Duck Go<\/a> &#8211; Doesn&#8217;t track your searches.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecosia.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ecosia<\/a> &#8211; donates 80% of its profits to planting trees.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Google Scholar<\/a> &#8211; for academic and scholarly information.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/swisscows.com\/?culture=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Swisscows<\/a> &#8211; Based in Switzerland. Shows related queries. Family friendly content. Treats your privacy seriously. Uses money earned through advertising to fund projects to provide food and education to disadvantage children in the likes of Haiti and Columbia.<\/p>\n<p>The search engines below are called &#8216;Meta Search Engines&#8217; as they pull results from the likes of Google, Bing, and other search engines in one place:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dogpile.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dogpile<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.metacrawler.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MetaCrawler<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How often have you put a word or phrase or sentence into a search in Google or other search engine?
