{"id":2585,"date":"2016-09-01T10:01:13","date_gmt":"2016-09-01T09:01:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/or\/stromnessacademylibrary\/?p=2585"},"modified":"2016-09-01T14:55:54","modified_gmt":"2016-09-01T13:55:54","slug":"a-new-session-a-new-term","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/or\/stromnessacademylibrary\/2016\/09\/01\/a-new-session-a-new-term\/","title":{"rendered":"A New Session, A New Term"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So, the ever repeating cycle of a school year starts again.\u00a0 This Librarian, after 24 years (is it really that long) is\u00a0 already up and running welcoming old and new pupils and staff alike to the library.\u00a0 The summer proved busy (yep, I am in during some of the holidays) with many jobs being done.<\/p>\n<p>What does a School Librarian get up to when working during the school holidays?\u00a0 Well, here is some of what is done:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Shelf tidying<\/li>\n<li>Stocktake<\/li>\n<li>Processing new books<\/li>\n<li>LMS (Library Management System) maintenance<\/li>\n<li>Preparing S1 Library cards and adding pupils to LMS<\/li>\n<li>Checking class lists against LMS<\/li>\n<li>Annual report writing<\/li>\n<li>More shelf tidying<\/li>\n<li>Lesson preparation (Library &amp; Information Literacy Skills)<\/li>\n<li>Cleaning up library files on server &#8211; getting rid of unused or superseded documents<\/li>\n<li>Clearing out emails (archiving where necessary)<\/li>\n<li>Book orders<\/li>\n<li>Preparing library guides for new pupils and new staff<\/li>\n<li>Activities prep (Running a beginners <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/or\/stromnessacademylibrary\/activities\/dungeons-dragons\/\">Dungeons &amp; Dragons<\/a> activity on Friday afternoon so help guides and characters made up &#8211; this work is also done at home in my own time)<\/li>\n<li>Sorting magazines and newspapers (The Orcadian) ensuring in date order and in correct file boxes<\/li>\n<li>Even more shelf tidying<\/li>\n<li>Plant care &#8211; yep, the plants (Spider plants; Dracenas; Yuccas; Begonias) have to be cared for too (the smaller ones get taken home for repotting)<\/li>\n<li>Statistics updates<\/li>\n<li>Logbook updates<\/li>\n<li>Notices and posters &#8211; updating and or printing out fresh ones<\/li>\n<li>Library Guiding &#8211; updating<\/li>\n<li>Preparing new computer logbooks and booking sheets<\/li>\n<li>Thinking up new ideas<\/li>\n<li>Long term planning<\/li>\n<li>Yet more shelf tidying &#8211; yes I have said that a few times, but there is a lot of it.<\/li>\n<li>etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So, we are now second week in and it doesn&#8217;t really feel like we have been away.\u00a0 Fresh faces and\u00a0our regulars\u00a0are visiting the library during break times.\u00a0 Computers, board games and Magic the Gathering are proving as popular as ever.<\/p>\n<p>We are still fairly quiet during classtime, but a small number of 6th year have discovered that the library can be quite a good place to study during their &#8216;free&#8217; periods &#8211; would like to maybe see more.\u00a0 S1 and S2 classes have started to come for library periods where they will be doing library and information literacy skills as well as personal reading.\u00a0 Next week, though is when it will get busier with the Geography Department starting their research projects &#8211;
