{"id":2305,"date":"2015-09-29T10:54:24","date_gmt":"2015-09-29T09:54:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/salibblog.wordpress.com\/?p=2262"},"modified":"2015-09-29T10:54:24","modified_gmt":"2015-09-29T09:54:24","slug":"postcards-paintings-picnic-competition-light","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/or\/stromnessacademylibrary\/2015\/09\/29\/postcards-paintings-picnic-competition-light\/","title":{"rendered":"Postcards, Paintings, Picnic, Competition &amp; Light"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Thursday 8th October, yep! &#8211; that is next week and the second last day of term.\u00a0 &#8220;Yipee!&#8221;, I hear you say.\u00a0 So, next Thursday sees us returning to our annual celebration of poetry with the return to the tried and tested <strong>Poetry Picnic<\/strong> format.\u00a0 It will be held in the school library at lunchtime (12:25 &#8211; 1:30pm).\u00a0 Snacks, tea and coffee will be available (for small donation towards costs) as well as general banter about poetry on this year&#8217;s theme of &#8216;<strong>Light<\/strong>&#8216; (and maybe just general banter) in celebration of National Poetry Day.<\/p>\n<p>What can you look forward to?<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000\"><b><span style=\"font-family:'Trebuchet MS', 'sans-serif'\">Sharing Poetry<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-family:'Trebuchet MS', 'sans-serif'\"> \u2013 Poetry postcard deliveries will take place during periods 1 \u2013 3 next Thursday 8<sup><span style=\"font-size:small\">th<\/span><\/sup> October.\u00a0 Where teachers will &#8216;drop everything and read&#8217; poems from this year&#8217;s (or previous years poetry postcards) if convenient, otherwise the poem will be read out at the end of the lesson.\u00a0 We will require some S6 volunteers to help deliver these cards.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000\"><b><span style=\"font-family:'Trebuchet MS', 'sans-serif'\">Poetry Competition<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-family:'Trebuchet MS', 'sans-serif'\"> \u2013 Write a poem on the theme of \u2018Light\u2019.\u00a0 Poem can be based on your own thoughts, feelings, etc. on \u2018light\u2019 or use one of the paintings on display in the library and write a poetic response to it.\u00a0 Staff and pupils can enter.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/or\/public\/stromnessacademylibrary\/uploads\/sites\/654\/2015\/09\/competition.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2265\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/or\/public\/stromnessacademylibrary\/uploads\/sites\/654\/2015\/09\/competition.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"Competition\" width=\"300\" height=\"211\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-family:'Trebuchet MS', 'sans-serif'\"><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-family:'Trebuchet MS', 'sans-serif'\"><strong>Poetry &amp; Plagiarism<\/strong> &#8211; As part of the introduction to the poetry competition, S2 pupils have been given a chance in English Library \/ Literacy periods to start to consider writing a poem about &#8216;Light&#8217;.\u00a0 Pupils respond to a painting which has clever use of light or has a title with &#8216;light&#8217; in it.\u00a0 They write 5-6 lines of poetry.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-family:'Trebuchet MS', 'sans-serif'\"><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-family:'Trebuchet MS', 'sans-serif'\">They are then asked to swap their work with someone else.\u00a0 The pupils then writes their name on the piece of work they got.\u00a0 Pupils head off to do 10-15 minutes of personal reading whilst the teacher and librarian go round and look at the poetry giving out up to 3 stamps each for work which shows promise or is looking good&#8230; based on initial impressions.\u00a0 Those with the most stamps get a peedie prize (sweetie).\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-family:'Trebuchet MS', 'sans-serif'\"><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-family:'Trebuchet MS', 'sans-serif'\">The outcry is tangible as pupils are getting &#8216;rewards&#8217; for something they didn&#8217;t write.\u00a0 We then have a short discussion on what was wrong with this and why, including how it makes people feel.\u00a0 Thus, they get a feeling about exactly what plagiarism is and why we insist on pupils using their own words and ensuring they reference their sources of information.\u00a0 Thank you to the ever useful School Librarians&#8217; Network forum for the idea.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000\"><b><span style=\"font-family:'Trebuchet MS', 'sans-serif'\">Poetry Picnic<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-family:'Trebuchet MS', 'sans-serif'\"> \u2013 Come along to the poetry picnic held over the whole of lunch. Pop in for a short while are stay the full 40 minutes of your lunch.\u00a0 We might even bring back the popular &#8216;tongue twister&#8217; competition.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family:'Trebuchet MS', 'sans-serif'\"><span style=\"color:#000000\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000\"><b><span style=\"font-family:'Trebuchet MS', 'sans-serif'\">Pupil helpers<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-family:'Trebuchet MS', 'sans-serif'\"> \u2013 There will be a requirement for some pupil volunteers to help with the poetry picnic and to tidy up afterwards so anyone interested should get in touch with Mrs Sinclair. (NB.
