Books, reading and life in a school library

Take the item(s) to the Issue Desk. Show the Librarian your library card. The Librarian will record the loan on OLIVER, the computerised library management system.

To remind you when the book is due back, the return date will be stamped on the date label in the front of the book.

RETURNING BOOKS

Return books ON or BEFORE the return date stamped on the date label in the front of the book.

Pupils should tell the Librarian when they return books so that they can be immediately processed. If the Librarian is not available, please come back another time. Books returned when the Librarian is not available to process them (which subsequently appear to be missing) will still be deemed to be the responsibility of the pupils or staff.

DON’T leave it lying on a table – it might get lost.
DON’T put it on the shelving trolley.
DON’T put it back on the shelves.

It must be properly returned or you might find that you will get overdue notices about a book you thought you had returned. You might even have to pay for it if it can’t be located.

REMEMBER! TELL THE LIBRARIAN YOU HAVE RETURNED A BOOK.

RENEWALS

If you haven’t finished a book by the return date you can ask the Librarian to renew it. She will stamp a new return date on the book. You should bring the book to the library to get it renewed.

OVERDUES

If you haven’t returned a book by its RETURN DATE you will get an overdue notice via your Glow email. (Check your email regularly, inlcuding the junk folder)

You will also get general reminders via the daily bulletin, your register teacher, English teacher, or Guidance teacher. If you get one you should RETURN or RENEW the book IMMEDIATELY (Bring the slip with you when you come to the library).

If you ignore these reminders then a letter will be sent home to your parents.

REMEMBER! To avoid getting overdue notices, return your books on time!

REMEMBER! Tell the Librarian when you have returned a book!

LOST OR DAMAGED BOOKS

If you lose a book tell the Librarian as soon as possible so that you can arrange to pay for the (full) cost of replacing it. Alternatively you may replace a book with a new or second hand one in very good or excellent condition. (You will not be charged for books that can be repaired.) Remember that if you haven’t returned a book the Librarian will chase you up so you can’t just ignore the fact it is lost or damaged.

RESERVATIONS & REQUESTS

You can reserve a book if someone else has it out via OLIVER our online catalogue – you will need to login in to use this.

Alternatively ask the Librarian for a reservation slip and fill it out.

Also, if the book you want is not in the library you can fill out a slip and the Librarian will try to get it for you from The Orkney Library. (See Inter Library Loans)

The Librarian will tell you when the book arrives.

INTER LIBRARY LOANS

The school library is able to borrow books from The Orkney Library. In most cases this is in connection with curricular projects supplementing our own stock.

If you wish books and / or other material which is not available in the school library we may be able to obtain them for you. It is recommended that you go to The Orkney Library  yourself but if you are unable to do so, please speak to Mrs Sinclair who can try and obtain the resources on your behalf.

If the books are not available, then you can apply for an Inter Library Loan, either via the school library or the public library who will request the books from other libraries in the UK.

Please note that there is a fee for this service of £5.20 for an Inter-library loan or £3.25 with a student concession.
