Children in Need 2021

Term Two so far..
Here’s an update on what has been going on in school this term so far:
Lots of creativity going on in the Nursery (with the P1 – 2 children as well)
Playing with the water wheel.
P1 -4 compared Victorian and modern schools (and are quite pleased schools are different now!)
P1 – 4 made a fireplace for our Victorian living area.
P5 – 7 have been working with Microbits…
… and doing experiments with straws, learning how to change the pitch.
We all learned about firework safety before Bonfire Night.
We have started a rugby club, run by Orkney Rugby.
Show Racism the Red Card
Today we all wore red to support the charity https://www.theredcard.org/
We raised £23.60 for the charity, well done everyone!
Learning about germs
The Nursery – P4 children learned about germs.
First they did an experiment with glitter to see how easily germs spread.
Then we did another experiment.
First we dipped our fingers into water with pepper in (the pepper represented the germs):
Then we dipped our fingers into soap:
The soap on our fingers meant that the pepper couldn’t stick. The germs were repelled!
We learned that we should always use soap when we wash our hands.
Pupil Committees
Our Pupil Committees for this session have been formed. Each group will now start working on their priorities, which they will feed back to the rest of the school and community.

A visit from Spud and the Orkney Native Wildlife Project
Today we had a visit from Holly, Lindsey and Spud. They came to tell us about stoats, and why they are having such an impact on Orkney’s native wildlife. Then Spud showed us how good he is at tracking the stoats. He has a much better sense of smell than us!
Orkney Science Festival
The Orkney Science Festival is going on at the moment, and we have been taking part in some online workshops.
Forces
We all took part in a forces session, which involved some experiments involving forces.
