The children sang, performed Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and We three kings on the tone chimes, Good King Wenceslas on the recorder, Jingle Bells on piano. We sang lots of carols, Rev Julia did a talk called “What’s that sound?” about the Nativity. We also said goodbye and thank you to Laura who is leaving us at the end of term.

Shapinsay School Tree Lighting
The children sang songs outside by the tree on Friday 1st December.![]()

Then the P7s turned on the lights on the tree after the singing. We have also decorated the small tree inside the school.
Children in Need
We have been doing some children in need fundraising. We raised £165.96. We did a change snake and the bearpee challenge, so that is how we raised so much money. We did the bearpee challenge through the week before the big day and the change snake was a lot of fun.

P5-7 have been learning about the human skeleton and an interesting fact that we learnt is that a baby has about 300 bones and an adult has 206. The largest bone in our body is the femur which is the thigh bone.

P1-4 have been learning about Australia and some interesting facts about it. We have also been learning about some animals over there too. Have you ever wondered why they wear sunhats with corks on the end of strings? it’s actually to keep flies, midges and mosquitos away.

We have been learning about Black History as part of Black History Month. On the last day of term we all wore red to Show Racism the Red Card,

The P7 children entered the Orkney Sun2 competition which was part of the Science Festival. They had to compare the effectiveness of single and double-sided solar panels by collecting data and analysing it. They worked out that the E-W panels are better early and late, and the South facing panel is better at or around noon. The judges praised their ‘thorough investigation of the effect of the white reflector’ and awarded them second prize.
We took part in several workshops during the 2023 OISF. We did workshops on marine superstars, stars on a plate, fossils, the Sun, Circular Economy and Dementia.
Thanks to everyone who came in, we had a great time!
