Well done P7

The P7 children entered the Orkney Sun2 competition which was part of the Science Festival. They had to compare the effectiveness of single and double-sided solar panels by collecting data and analysing it. They worked out that the E-W panels are better early and late, and the South facing panel is better at or around noon. The judges praised their ‘thorough investigation of the effect of the white reflector’ and awarded them second prize.

STEM day 2023

On Wednesday 7th June, P5 – 7 pupils went to Kirkwall to take part in a day of STEM activities. They had to complete some challenges, as well as present some of the STEM learning they have been doing in class.

Well done to Miss Angier and the children, who came home with 3 prizes!

Library trip to meet Joseph Coelho

We went to Kirkwall on Monday 15th May. First we walked through Kirkwall where Miss Angier talked to everyone about different rocks (the older class have been learning about them in Science).

Then we went into the Orkney museum for a quick visit (we would very much recommend it!)

We had a lovely picnic lunch in Tankerness Gardens.

Then we went to the library to meet Joseph Coelho, the children’s laureate. We had a great time hearing about his writing, and we even wrote a poem together with him. We will be using what we learned to write our own poetry in class.

Flotta trip

On Friday 12th June the primary children went to Flotta to visit the oil terminal. This was part of the prize that the school won in the 2022 STEM competition. We had a super day, learning about how the terminal works, and about the move to cleaner hydrogen fuel in the future. Highlights also included seeing the many rabbits and seals, and the delicious lunch! Huge thanks to the team at Flotta, we had an amazing day!
