On September 21st we carried out a ‘seaweed survey’ as part of the Orkney International Science Festival (link<\/a>). This was our first long day of outdoor field work and it’s certainly a type of working we’ll have to turn to again. The children were so focussed on each stage of the survey and demonstrated such a variety of skills, as a teacher the whole day was a real joy. Later in the week everyone took it in turns to have a go at adding to the presentation of the results, using Microsoft Powerpoint. Seaweed is becoming a bit of a sub-topic running throughout the year. We’ve spent some time learning about the work of Henri Matisse and in particular his later ‘cut outs’ which have a seaweed theme. Last week we worked on a piece of art as a gift for the Orkney Library to thank them for their support and a kind donation of books. We combined our learning about Matisse’s cutouts with our spray painting skills from earlier in the term to produce “So long and thanks for all the fish<\/del> books”. The image below shows the final piece\u00a0in place on the wall in the library. We were delighted that it was so well received.<\/p>\n\n\t\t
