When when we had finished writing our stories, we read another person’s story and helped them to find any capital letters or full stops that had been missed out!

This morning we did phoneme practice with a partner. We had to spell words from different phoneme families. Some pairs did very well and used the phonemes correctly in the words.

In gymnastics, we were learning how to land properly after a jump. Everyone did very well to make a soft landing and used their knees and ankles like springs.

Next we tried to join a balance on the bench to a jump. There were some great balances using different parts of the body!

That is a real face of determination!

lundi is Monday

This morning we started to learn the days of the week in French. Soon we will be able to say the date in French.

image

image

We are revising our phoneme families and practising our sight words.

This afternoon we took the weather station and thermometers outside to take some readings and compared the information with the BBC weather forecast for Cumbernauld. Our temperature readings were a bit high because the thermometers were in the sunshine for a while!

image

We also finished our cold weather art, by putting felt scarves, gloves and hats onto our people. We then stuck them onto the cold weather background. They look really effective, don’t they?

End of the week!

image image

Today we we were thinking about halves and linking this to symmetry.  We worked out how many stickers would be needed on each side. We know that 4 add 4 equals 8, so 4 is half of 8. We found out half of 10 and 12 too!

image image image image

We practised our typing skills and learnt how to insert a picture into our documents. We remembered that Robert Burns wrote lots of lovely poems that are used for Valentine’s Day, so included a famous line from one of his poems.

There was a visit from the afternoon Nursery children to wish us Happy Chinese New Year.

image

It was lovely to hear their music and listen to them wishing us Happy New Year in Chinese- they said the words very well and we tried to reply to them in Chinese too.

“And hold it!”

Today in P.E. we were linking together some rolls and balances. We had to think about being controlled when we came out of one move and linked it to another.image image image image image

image

In our number lesson we were finding halves of shapes. A square is really good because if you fold in half one way you get two rectangles and if you fold diagonally you get two triangles!

image

We had to cut very carefully to make sure both halves were the same size.

In the Learning Zone we chose some different activities and different construction materials.

I am looking forward to seeing your cool dance moves at the disco this evening.

Homework 10.2.16 – 22.2.16

Homework from 10/2/16 until 22/2/16

Language

Phonemes

We are going to practise the phoneme families that we have been learning this year – take a look back at the phonemes on your homework blogs and test yourself on the sounds – take the phoneme challenge at home as well as in school.

Homework ideas:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/wordsandpictures/phonics/index.shtml

http://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/ks1/literacy/phonics/play/

Experiment with words and sounds.

Common words:

Keep practising the words you have been learning to read

you     they     all       are     my     herhow     last     many     miss   more   now    never   other   some     take     them   thing    ask         best         eat       find       gave     home  again     always       book     cold     day     fast   well     what     when   where   which   too   two     three   four     five   six     number

Take the sight word challenge How many can you read confidently?

Reading

  • A new reading book will now usually be given each Wednesday. The days for reading are Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, so please make sure that pupils have their reading books in their bags so that they can complete reading activities.
  • Make a note of any new words.
  • Which strategy/strategies did you use to work out the new words.

Number

We have just started to explore the idea of fractions. We started with a whole then split this into halves – both halves have to be the same size! We have introduced the sign ½  so look out for that too.

Here are some ideas of how you can practise at home!

Halve it! Ask children to find as many examples as they can of halves being mentioned in newspapers or magazines. These examples might come from sports reports (half-time, first half), times (half an hour), adverts (half-price), measurements (half full, half a cup), etc. We have introduced the sign ½  so look out for that too. Children draw, stick or write about them for their homework jotter.

Half a shape Ask children to draw shapes and find different ways of finding half.

Half full Ask children to find containers at home, such as measuring jugs, plastic bottles and cartons, and to half-fill them with water

Only use whole and halves in these games until pupils have been taught other fractions.

Interdisciplinary Learning

We are learning more about where Scottish food and drink comes from.

  • Just as we did on our Tesco trip, see if you can be a detective and look for Scottish foods when out in the supermarkets.
  • Research foods with a Scottish place name e.g. Dundee Cake, Arbroath smokies and make a list of the foods.

Weather

As we have started to learn about different weather conditions, watch some weather reports and think about/note down what information is given.

  • Create your own weather report about this week’s weather
    • Bring in printed weather forecasts from newspapers or the web
  • Bring in any news articles about Hurricane Imogen or other weather stories,

Tremendous Talent

We have had a fun-filled day today. This morning we all walked a mile which was good fun because we had friends from our House to talk to and the bigger ones encouraged us to keep going! Then we got chance to look at the baby teacher photos.

image

Aren’t they cute?

We also voted in the cutest pet competition on the way to lunch- it was great fun!  In the afternoon it was Woodlands Got Talent and we were represented by two girls singing “Let it go”.

image image

They did a brilliant job and sang beautifully- we are very proud of them.

Have a wonderful break and I will see you all next Thursday.

Rolling along!

In P.E. we are adding more skills to our gymnastic development. As well as balancing, we are practising how to roll correctly. We were practising log, teddy and forward rolls. Mrs Macleod showed us a forward roll but the blood rushed to her head so she didn’t get up onto her feet properly! Maybe next time?

image image image image

Lots of pupils achieved success trying rolls that they had never attempted before – well done everyone!

Yesterday in the Learning Zone we had great fun learning and creating so here are some photos which were not put onto the blog yesterday.image image image image image

Good luck to people taking part in the Talent Competition tomorrow. Also remember that you can still take part in the aeroplane, cute pet and name the baby teacher competitions tomorrow. The costs are 50p, £1 and 50p respectively. Looking forward to a fun day tomorrow!

Marvellous mapping!

As we are learning about Scottish food, we are developing our skills. One of the important skills we are learning is mapping. This afternoon we looked at a map of Scotland and we added foods to the map by looking at the place names.

image

Have you eaten any of these foods? Can you think of any more which include a place in the name?  Tomorrow we will be looking at the Atlases- we were very excited when we looked at them briefly today!

How fast?

We put out our weather station at lunchtime and checked it at 3 o’clock.  It hadn’t collected any rain.  The weather station showed that the wind was coming from the west and some of the gusts hit the maximum score of 40mph!!

Hold onto your hats!!!

What a windy day!  We built a weather station today which should be able to measure how fast the wind is blowing and in which direction.  We will put it out tomorrow and record our findings.   We checked the weather forecast on the BBC and compared it with our outside thermometer and the weather conditions we observed.  It was quite accurate.

I hope you all got home safe and sound and have a cosy afternoon and evening at home to escape Storm Henry.
