Topic    The Giant of Thistle Mountain

As part of our topic, we have decided on a name for our community – Snow Valley and we will be adding our houses and other community buildings to our class frieze.

Our village will be entering a new human-rights based “Best Village competition” soon, so I would like you to design the poster!

It can be drawn or printed out.

Make the poster eye-catching, include the correct information and spell correctly!

The poster should include:

  •  a heading – Best village competition
  • Date of entry is by 16th May 2018
  • 2 special things that the judges will be looking for e.g. co-operation, respect, participation, responsibility

Think about links to human Rights and what makes a “good” community.

 Number

We have started our block of learning which focuses on multiplication. As a fun starter, try this solve and shade activity to help you revise the times tables you have already practiced. If there is a sum that you are not sure of, then use what you already know to help e.g. 5 x 8 = 40, so if you want to know 6 x 8 then take 40 and add on 1 more lot of 8, so 40 + 8 = 48.

This is the site that we used for identifying equal groups.

This week we were learning to say our birthdays in French. Try this site to match the numbers and months to the date that you hear.

There are other activities too, so explore the site.

Monday 23rd April 2018

In numeracy we are working with Mrs McMillan on fractions. Today we were sorting out shapes that showed tenths and shapes that did not.  We also designed our own shapes showing tenths – we had to split the shape into ten EQUAL parts.  We will we working out tenths of amounts next.

vendredi le vingt avril

What a different day we have had today!

First of all we were learning about all the different skills that we can develop by building Lego models with others. We were communicating, working in different roles and building teamwork. Look at some of the models that we made:

Our Star Pupil was awarded her badge in class today because we wanted to celebrate her  success together with the class teachers.

jeudi le dix-neuf avril

Practising our shuttle runs!

Is my jump longer than on Tuesday?

Our third skill rotation was shot putt where we were throwing from a sitting position. Most of us had some better scores than on Tuesday which shows that our skills and fitness are improving.

This afternoon, we were starting the introductory work to our Global Storyline- The Giant of Thistle Mountain. We thought about what the topic might be about and then were put into our family groups to think about the most important things that communities need to work successfully. There were some disagreements but each group made their diamond of importance which we will compare in our next lesson.

mercredi le dix-huit avril

We have been revising the date in French, so please check the date of the blog- if it is written in French it helps you to think about days of the week, months of the year and numbers up to 31!

Today we were thinking about links in our number learning – times tables, fractions and telling the time. How many links can you think of at home? Remind everyone that a fraction is an equal part so if you are having 1/4 of a pizza, make sure that all the quarters are the same size!!

Y

We were practising the stations of the 5 times table with our group. Can you say it backward? Keep practising so that you are very familiar with the pattern of the numbers.

 Interdisciplinary

This week your activity is giving you the chance to explore a map and use the information to answer questions. You need to think about turning left and right, so if you need more help with this, remember to use the handy hints ( most children write with their right hand)! Turn the map around so that you can pretend that you are walking along the roads and making the turns yourself!

Have fun – map reading is a great skill to develop!
