Writing a letter or email is a key skill.

At this time it is extremely important to focus on positives and telling someone you appreciate them can have a very positive impact on them. Taking five minutes to tell someone thank you for something they have done for you, no matter how simple, can really make them feel appreciated and help them to understand how important they are.

Have a look at this lesson, then write a thank you letter or email to someone who has helped you or done something for you or someone you appreciate. Send it to them and you will make them happy during this tough time.

Time games

Try a couple more of the time games. Think about which area of time you want to get better at e.g. adding time, 24 hour time, timetables, half past, quarter to etc and find a game that practices that.

Re read yesterday’s Holes pages. There was an unexpected moment in this part of the story where you learn that the Warden is a woman and that she can be extremely scary and harsh.

As you are reading, take notes on anything you learn about the Warden – what she looks like, how she moves, what she says, how she treats people and how other people act towards her.

Draw the scene where the Warden is standing with Stanley and Mr Pendanski and telling Mr P off for not refilling their water bottles. Make sure you include details that are described in the book about the setting, what people say and how they are acting.

Sumdog competition

Congratulations to Euan who took the win this week in the sumdog competition!

He scored a massive 366 points and was leading from early on.

If anyone has any other ideas for how we could do the sumdog competition or any specific maths topics they would like included in the sumdog competition, let me know by commenting or by email.

Great job everyone who took part.

***SUMDOG COMPETITION 11AM***

After most of you compelted the spelling assessment, there were some words which caught a lot of you out!

I think it would be a great idea for us to practice these words EVERYDAY for a week and then we can test them again.

Take time to look at exactly what letters are in the word, what patterns you notice and also even take time to write down how the word is NOT spelled or what letters AREN’T in the word.

Here are the words to work on:

  1. How did Mr Sir mark where the boys were supposed to dig?
  2. Why was X-Ray annoyed at Stanley?
  3. When did the water truck come?
  4. What could Stanley see digging 200 yards away?
  5. How far in meters do you think 200 yards is? Guess then look it up
  6. Why did Mr Pendanski tell X-Ray (Rex) not to dig too hard?
  7. Why did the boys in group E have to wait for their water?
  8. What does the Warden do that is nice to the boys?

Maths

Daily 10 = this week, you should practice multiplying on Daily 10. Try 3 times every day and see what the highest level you can get 10/10 is.

time

This week, we are continuing with time after looking at timetables last week.

Adding on time is a very important part of managing and understanding time.

This game gives word problems which involve adding on time. Give it a go:

Finally sumdog maths championship today at 11am! Good luck

Greenfaulds High School P7 Transition Task

There is a transition task from Greenfaulds High School. This is very important as there are usually lots of transition events at this time of year where the High School staff get to know you, what you like and how you like to learn.

Please take the time to complete this task. If you need any help please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Hello Primary 7. We would like you to introduce yourself to us!

You can do this by producing a short video clip/letter or poster.
In this tell us a little bit about you and what you think we should know about you.

If you have any questions please include them too.

To submit your work you can take a photograph and email it directly to Miss Ferguson.

Good Luck and we look forward to hearing from you.

Sumdog spelling assessment

You all have a sumdog spelling assessment, take your time and give it a go!

***Don’t forget tomorrow is the sumdog championship at 11am***

Writing

Debating is a very important skill in developing your creative thinking and using your logic skills. It is very important to be able to think about an idea from both sides, plan what you think the arguments are for one side and think about how someone from the other side will respond to your ideas and arguments.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zhmdjhv

Check out this lesson about debates and write an argument for one of the debate ideas. I particularly like the one

Oceans are massive and full of fish, it doesn’t matter if we catch lots of fish.

You could also take some time to research the issue and get some facts to back up what you are saying.

Maths

https://www.transum.org/Maths/Exercise/Timetables.asp

Give this maths game a go – you need to read timetables and work out time durations.

Main task

Have a look at this train timetable. Can you create some questions about the timetable to ask someone else to answer? Start with simple questions like “what time does the First train leave from Nairn at”. You could then try some true or false questions e.g. “True or False a train leaves Aberdeen at 7:08 on Sundays”.

No word problem today, but here are last week’s answers

I go out for a bike ride at 11am. I cycle for 2 hours. My average speed is 10 miles per hour (mph). I stop for lunch beside the river and eat my sandwich. It takes me 20 minutes to have lunch. I cycle home much faster because I have so much energy from my lunch. I cycle home at 20 miles per hour.

  1. How far do I cycle before I stop for lunch? 20 miles
  2. How long does it take me to cycle home? 1 hour (20 miles at 20 miles per hour)
  3. True or false – I get home at 2:20pm? True 11 + 2 hours = 1pm + 20 minutes = 1:20pm + 1 hour = 2:20 pm

This week we are working on clothes words. Why not make a poster or video or write a song to show what clothes words you have learned and how to pronounce them/spell them/remember them?

Daily 10

Don’t forget to keep doing the Daily 10 regularly (every day!) to keep up your mental maths skills. You could compete with everyone in your house and see who can get to the highest level.

Main task

We are working on reading and understanding timetables. Try this train time table. Take some time to look at the timetable first before answering the questions. It will help you to understand the information better.

  1. What time did I go to bed? 10pm
  2. What time is my coffee ready at? 6:15am
  3. True or False – I start work at 7 am? False – 6:45 am

Language

spelling

On Friday, there will be a sumdog spelling assessment on some of the words we have been working on over the last few week. Take some time today, tomorrow and Thursday to look back over the spelling lists that I have been putting up on Mondays. Read the words, write the words, type the words, draw them, sing them… whatever helps you learn them.

This week’s words are:

absence, ancient, certainly, definitely, disappear, existence, guidance, government, irrelevant, muscle, niece, receive, rhythm, temperature.

Semi-colons

Colons and semi-colons are tricky punctuation to use and often get forgotten about in our writing.

Have a go at this lesson from BBC Bitesize – there are a few videos and a quiz to check if you have understood.

read today’s pages from Holes. Guess what the following words mean and then look up their meaning using a dictionary or the internet. Read before the word and after the word, then insert your guess where the word is and check if the sentences still make sense.

shovelful

canteen

arced

pried

record any other words you don’t know the meaning of and guess their meaning before looking them up.

Let’s also work on our prediction skills. Prediction is a key skill for understanding what you have read and making sense of a longer piece of text.

Answer these prediction questions

  1. If Stanley finds something interesting again, do you think he will give it to X-Ray or the warden? Why?
  2. What kidn of relationship will X-Ray and Stanley have? Will the be friends? Team mates? Enemies? Why?
  3. How will the Warden react when the Warden finds out that Mr Pendanski didn’t tell The Warden about the fossil that Stanley found?
  4. If one of the kids was going to try and escape, how would the do it? What would happen?

Place value practice

timetables

we are continuing to work on reading time tables and understanding the information contained within it.

Look at the following timetable and answer the questions
