Numeracy

We have been developing our understanding of the cost of items that we buy and profit and loss. To help us do this we have calculated the overall cost for our Jelly Bean Reindeer that we made for the Christmas Fayre. We have been able to identify the best value between all of the jelly beans that we priced. We then calculated the profit or loss that was made by selling them.

• Calculate the overall cost to make your product then decide on a price to sell it. You should try to make a profit rather than a loss!

Literacy

Reading: Prediction – We have been revising prediction in our reading. We have been learning to note down some clues that we find in the text to help us make accurate predictions and use them when writing our own.

Writing: Poetry – In class we have been learning about structuring a poem. We created a poem describing ourselves where we had been given an exact structure to follow; this helped us to create our verses.

Spelling: sounds created by ____ed  – We have been identifying the three different sounds that are produced when ed is added to a word. We have been able to identify the ‘t’, ‘ed’ and ‘d’ sounds in our spelling words, for example in stopped (t), needed (ed) and covered (d)

• Can you predict what is going to happen next in a T.V. programme? Everyone make a prediction and see who is the most accurate.

We have been learning to write a poem that includes our thoughts and feelings and shared some of the good qualities that we have seen in each other.

We have been learning how to make our estimates more accurate.

We are learning to use our own words when paraphrasing though it can be tricky sometimes!

This morning we learned about the different sounds that ‘ed’ makes when added to a word. We were able to identify three different sounds: t, d and ed.

This afternoon we were finishing off our Christmas picture for the Christmas Fayre.

We have been comparing the price of our shopping list in different shops to see which one offers the best value for money.

Primary Seven have been working on improving the accuracy of their spelling in all of their written work. We can use our reading books to help us with some of the words.

Numeracy

We have been learning about the value of money and ways in which we spend money. We have identified the difference between services and goods as well as how these are paid for. We have also been considering which services and goods are needs and which are wants. We are beginning to compare the cost of items to help us identify the best value.

• Compare the price of one item (e.g. bread or butter) in 3 different shops and calculate any difference in price.

Reading: Paraphrasing – We have been developing our paraphrasing skills in class using our reading books. Just remember to USE YOUR OWN WORDS!

Writing: Poetry – We have been learning to use personification when describing something. E.g. The wind’s icy fingers touched my face…

Spelling: Numerical Prefixes  – We have been identifying quantities using some prefixes (mono, bi, tri, quad, cent, mill)

Ideas for further practise at home:

• Can you paraphrase something you have watched? Try to paraphrase an item from a news report on TV.
  • Can you identify examples of personification? Be on the lookout for personification in magazines and books then copy down any examples you find.
  • Describe something you have seen or felt using personification.
  • Write down all the words with number prefixes you have seen or heard. Don’t forget to include abbreviations such as cm and ml!
