Outdoor Learning

Today Brian told us about seed potatoes.  He had some to show us and they looked like ordinary potatoes.  He told us that if we left the potatoes on newspaper for about one month the “eyes” would start to grow roots and then we could sow them in soil to grow potatoes.  From one potato planted, we should get 10 potatoes to grow.  This process is called “chitting” and each of us had the chance to take part.

After one month we will sow the potatoes in the planters in our outdoor area.  We had to weed these to get them ready.  Brian told us that weeds are “plants in the wrong place”.  He showed us the difference between fibrous weeds and tap weeds.  When we sow the potatoes it willl take about twelve weeks for them to grow and then we can pick them and make baked potatoes, mashed potatoes and chips.   Brian even suggested using the herbs we planted before Christmas to create a herb butter to put on our potatoes for extra taste.  We can’t wait!!

A New Term

We have started term 3 with a bang in Primary 4!  We are raring to go and can’t wait to learn even more.

We have been learning about a famous Scot named John Logie Baird and we are amazed at how his invention of the television has changed the world we live in.

It came as a huge surprise to us that televisions used to look very different to the way they look now, and that they didn’t used to have colour or sound!  Someone even asked Mrs Wightman how she coped when television was like this!!!!

We even watched a Charlie Chaplin film to see what Mrs Wightman was talking about.  It was really funny and it really showed how there was no need for talking in films.

Outdoor Learning

Today we took part in some planting activities.  We planted basil, sage, thyme, leeks, tomatoes, lemon and coriander and spinach. We had to use compost, seeds and planter trays of different sizes.  We also had to water them.  We will leave them in the outdoor classroom to grow over the holidays.

Individually we planted peas and broad beans.  We will take these home to look after over the holidays, then bring them back to school after the holidays to see who has managed to take good care of theirs and grow the longest shoot.
