Great Start to Health Week

Today the children had lots of good learning experiences and lessons on how to be healthy and to help others if they are injured or have an accident. Have a look at our photos. We did the daily mile, learned CPR and first aid. We know how to help someone who may be choking and how to put someone in the recovery position.

A Fast and Fun Week in P4

Certificate Winners

Mya won a certificate this week and was especially pleased with her poster about a non-fiction book.

Adam enjoyed reading a book about chocolate. His favourite is milk chocolate. He learned, “that hot chocolate used to have chilli peppers in it!”

Eilidh liked measuring in Maths and learned, “where you should put the ruler to start.”

Measuring for Maths

Ethan really liked measuring. Luca thinks we should measure to make sure things fit in our homes. Callum liked measuring in metres and centimetres.

HEALTH WEEK NEXT WEEK REMEMBER WATER PROOFS ON WEDNESDAY!!

Today we braved the outdoors to collect our tubs that had been strategically placed to catch rainfall last Wednesday. The children have learned the difference between climate and weather. Today alone we’d driving rain, sunshine and wind. Our tubs were full. Some of the children tried to use a bag like a windsock.

Growth Mind Set in P4

Luca explained that we have been learning about Usain Bolt as an example of how being determined and committed and positive can help you to achieve anything!  Roni and other girls would like to be a famous gymnasts, lots of children would like to be famous footballers. Naimh would like to be a successful author.

We believe that we can do anything and some of us need to build more confidence to do that.

Our gymnasts

What a great day the children had visiting Alloway to find out more about our national bard.  The children visited the museum, walked through the gardens and toured his cottage. They made butter too. The children behaved beautifully and were a credit to their parents and Whitelees Primary.

Scottish Showcase Big Success

The children of P4 and Mrs Garey would like to say a big thank you to all of our visitors this afternoon to the Scottish showcase.

The boys and girls thoroughly enjoyed learning, preparing for and then performing for you today. It really boosted their confidence and gave them purpose in their learning.

Thank you for the very positive comments that the children found very encouraging. Here are some below.

I enjoyed…

– Seeing all the children enjoy talking about their role models.

– How happy and confident the kids were.

– Being able to see what the children had learned and how confident the children were.

– Loved it.

– All of it. Especially the rendition of The Skye Boat Song.

– The children being involved and taking a part each.

– A lovely event and every child spoke so well and confidently. Thank you.

I loved it all. The baking was great.

Winter conditions are affecting many people today but for those of you who cannot make it to school here are some activities that you can complete to learn and have fun.

  • Recently you learned about time. Using a timer set for 1 minute find out :
  • A  how many star jumps you can do, B how many times you can write your name and C how many times you can write the alphabet.
  • Make an acrostic poem using the letters from WINTER
  • Practise the 3 digit subtraction you’ve been doing in class
  • Read your book and draw a picture of what is happening in the plot this week, choose  an event that you think is interesting or exciting. ( keep to this week’s pages)
  • After you’ve done two of the tasks above time yourself building a snow man.
  • Draw a winter picture

I look forward to seeing your work when you bring it in tomorrow.

PE Days

PE has changed to Tuesday and Thursday for P4 and should stay that way until Easter.

We’d like to welcome Callum to our class and we are sure that he’ll settle in well  in P4. We had fun doing a workout to raise money for Lepra to fight leprosy and to help others. Thank you for your kind donations.

Scotland vs Australia

P4 began learning more about Scotland and Australia

We learned about forest fires and the danger they are to the animals and people. We found out that the capital of Australia is Canberra and that most towns or cities are near the coast for water. The populations of the countries, Australia has around 24 million people and Scotland has around 5.3 million. We also learned about the size of both places.

Magic Maths

We learned how to subtract 3 digit numbers and are feeling much more confident in our strategy. We used our Growth Mind set to get better and better.

Kung hei fat choi

This week we’ve been busy learning about Chinese traditions for New Year.

We’ve learned about Chinese inventions like paper and about the Great Wall. We learned about the food Chinese people have at this time including how noodles represent everlasting happiness and spring rolls represent gold bars for good fortune. Shrimps represent a smile for happiness.

This year is the year of the rooster and we learned about an old Chinese folktale called The Rooster, the Dragon and the Centipede.

Famous Scots

We learned about Charles Rennie Mackintosh and how he designed his own house and the famous art school in Glasgow. We like his bold, clean and minimalist style.

Our last Queen Mary was a prisoner for around 18 years before she was executed.

PE next week on Wednesday and Thursday.
