It is never too early to start developing good study habits – and putting a plan in place now can help to avoid the pressure of trying to do everything at the last minute.

🗓️ Why is a study plan important?

1. It helps you stay organised
There can be a lot to remember across several subjects. A study plan allows you to see exactly what you need to do and when you are going to do it.

2. It makes studying more manageable
Instead of looking at a whole course and thinking, “I have so much to revise!”, break it down into smaller, achievable tasks. Studying a little and often is much more manageable than trying to learn everything in the weeks before an exam.

3. It helps you prioritise
A good study plan allows you to identify subjects or topics that need more attention. You can make sure that you are spending your time where it will have the greatest impact.

4. It reduces stress
Knowing what you are going to study and when can help you feel more in control. A plan can prevent the panic that can come from leaving revision until the last minute.

5. It builds good habits
Regular study sessions help develop routines that will benefit you throughout S4–S6 and beyond school. The earlier you develop effective study habits, the easier it becomes to maintain them.

6. It allows you to balance study and your life
A study plan isn’t about studying every spare minute! It should include time for relaxation, hobbies, sport, family and friends. Building breaks into your plan is important and can actually help you study more effectively.

🔬 What should a good study plan look like?

Your study plan should be realistic and achievable. Think about:

📖 Which subjects do I need to study?

🎯 Which topics do I need to focus on?

⏰ When am I most able to concentrate?

📝 What type of study will I do?

🔄 When will I revisit topics I have already studied?

☕ When will I take breaks?

🏆 What do I want to achieve from each study session?

Remember that studying does not always mean reading through your notes. Effective study could include completing past-paper questions, testing yourself, creating flashcards, practising calculations, explaining a topic to someone else or using retrieval practice to see what you can remember without looking at your notes.

🌟 Start small and build from there

You don’t need to create the perfect study timetable straight away. Start by identifying a few regular study sessions each week and build your routine from there.

The most important thing is to have a plan and stick to it as much as possible. If something doesn’t work, change it!
