All S1 pupils follow a Broad General Education (BGE). Curriculum for Excellence (CfE) Levels 2 and 3 are the main levels covered, but some pupils may require CfE Level 1 or Early Level.
Our S1 pupils work through the following topics:
- Whole Numbers
- Sequences, Multiples and Factors
- Decimals
- Symmetry
- Time
- Fractions
- Integers
- Angles
- Algebra
- Coordinates
- Percentages
- Information Handling
- Measurement
- 2D shape
Pupils experience mental maths, non-calculator maths and calculator maths. All S1 pupils are gifted a scientific calculator from the school which we encourage them to bring with them every day for use in Maths and across the curriculum. As well as this, pupils have one period per week dedicated to enhancing their numeracy skills.

“Benchmarks” have been developed to provide clarity on the national standards expected within each curriculum area at each level. They set out clear lines of progression in numeracy and mathematics from Early to Fourth Levels. Their purpose is to make clear what learners need to know and be able to do to progress through the levels, and to support consistency in teachers’ and other practitioners’ professional judgements.
